The Seven Stallions , also known as Sibe Hängste , with the mountain ridge adjoining to the northeast , are collectively known as Solflue , are a mountain range in the Emmental Alps in the Swiss canton of Bern .

location

The ridge is located north of Interlaken and in the rear part of the Zulgtal . The municipalities of Eriz , Beatenberg and Horrenbach-Buchen have a share in the massif of the seven stallions .

The seven stallions form a 3 km long mountain ridge, which is oriented towards the southwest-northeast. In this direction the peaks follow from the main summit Schibe ( 1955  m above sea level ) to Sieben Hengste ( 1952  m above sea level ). The mountain ridge is bordered in the west by the Sichelpass, which separates the Justistal from the Sulzigraben (headwaters of the Zulg), in the south by the saddle near Oberberg, in the east by the Traubach valley and the Grünenbergpass and in the northeast by the valley of another source brook of the Zulg. The ridge of the seven stallions is continued on the one hand in the south-west adjoining Güggisgrat , on the other hand in the northeastern Hohgant . To the north-west and to the north, free-standing without any further pre-peaks towards the Swiss plateau, the ridge drops off steeply with a rock face, while there are only relatively slight slopes towards the south-east. This is where the vast Seefeld Alp spreads out. The seven stallions are named after seven protruding rocky peaks standing close together and all of the same shape. However, this view is only available from the north and west.

geology

From a geological point of view, the Seven Stallions are made up of sediments from the Helvetic Mountains, which were deposited around 225 to 65 million years ago on the northern edge of the ancient Mediterranean Sea, Tethys . These layers were only included in the folding of the Alps relatively late, around 20 million years ago. A crest-forming layer of Schrattenkalk is around 200 m thick . This is followed by silica limestone of the Hauterivium and Drusberg layers of the Barremium , which come to light on the steep north-west slope of the Seven Stallions. The layers collapse towards the southeast. Typical karst phenomena such as cart fields , sinkholes and caves were able to develop on the plateau of the Seven Stallions and on the adjacent Alp Seefeld . The Siebenhengste-Hohgant Cave, one of the largest cave systems on earth, is located in the chalky subsoil of the Sieben Hengste and the neighboring mountains .

Alpine rim summit

The mountain range of the Seven Hengste stands on the edge of the foothills of the Alps with a height difference of over 400 meters compared to the peaks to the north.
