history

The place name of Siegendorf can be interpreted as 'Village of Sigo'. The personal name refers to a foundation during the Frankish colonization, according to which Sigo would have been a Frankish nobleman. In 1270 the village was ceded by the Counts of Castell to the Cistercian monastery of Ebrach in the Steigerwald. In the 16th century the place was part of the Hochstift Würzburg , in the 19th century a rural community in the Kingdom of Bavaria.

Between 1556 and 1593 a legal dispute took place in Siegendorf . A peasant woman caused a fire in 1556 in which some houses in the village burned down. As a punishment, she lost all of her possessions. Her grandchildren Hans and Georg Scheller raised a claim to the goods given over by their grandmother. To enforce their rights, they attacked villagers, shot some horses and set fields on fire. They could not be caught until 1593. They were executed in Würzburg on July 21, 1593 .

Attractions

The center of the village is the Catholic branch church of St. Wendelin. It was built in the 19th century and is a simple cross-shaped building. Instead of a bell tower, the church has a small, four-sided roof turret . Most of the furnishings in the church date from the 18th century, the altarpiece of the Virgin Mary is said to come from the church in Bimbach . The oldest elements are two late Gothic wooden figures of Saints Peter and Paul from around 1450.

Besides the church, some wayside shrines from earlier times have been preserved in Siegendorf . They are symbols of popular piety and are typical of Catholic villages in Franconia. All of them date from the 19th century and some of them have unusual shapes. On the road to Oberschwarzach there is a small path chapel with a crucifixion relief from 1677. A crucifix , created by Georg Kreisel from Zell am Main , dates from 1934.
