Breitbach (formerly Breitbach unter der Steig) is a district of the market Oberschwarzach in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt .

Geographical location

Breitbach is relatively centrally located in the Oberschwarzach municipality. Immediately to the north is the Oberschwarzach district of Kammerforst , while the municipality of Ebrach in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg begins in the east . The federal road 22 crosses the village coming from the west in an easterly direction. Some distance to the southeast rises the village of Schönaich, which also belongs to Oberschwarzach . In the west is the Schlottermühle, further west the district of Kitzingen begins with the district of Neudorf von Prichsenstadt .

history

The ending -bach refers to a foundation in the 7th or 8th century AD. It goes to the brook or back in width, which flows directly next to Breitbach. The Lords of Stollberg were the original owners. They enfeoffed ministerials with the village, who from then on called themselves "von Breitbach". The Fuchs von Bimbachn also had lesser possessions there . In the 13th century the influence of the nearby Ebrach Abbey in the village grew . By 1678 the monastery had risen to become the sole lord of the village.

For a long time the gallows of the prince-bishop's main court in Oberschwarzach stood in the Breitbacher district . The Breitbachers came into possession of the Galgen- Flur through an exchange deal . On May 1, 1978 Breitbach was incorporated into the municipality of Oberschwarzach in the district of Schweinfurt. Previously, the place was a municipality in the dissolved district of Gerolzhofen .

Attractions

The center of the village is the Catholic branch chapel of St. Johannes Baptist located on Bundesstrasse 22 . The simple building with the large roof turret above the choir was built around 1757 . Rococo elements predominate in the interior . The high altar is dominated by a painting of the crucifixion of Christ . Originally there was also a figure of Anna Selbdritt in the little church , which probably came from the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider.

There is also a small chapel on the main road, which was built there in 1821. Although the district of Breitbach is also characterized by many wayside shrines, they are not as old as in other Franconian villages. Most were erected in the first half of the 20th century.

To the east of the village, in the southwestern area of the forest area of the Hohe Buchene Forest in the Ebracher Forest , directly on the main road is the Steigerwald treetop path , a 1152 m long educational and treetop path .
