Political career

Gentele joined the AfD on August 30, 2013 and became a member of the board of the AfD district association Nordhausen - Eichsfeld - Mühlhausen . In 2014 he moved into the state parliament via the state list of the AfD Thuringia and was deputy chairman of the petitions committee there until April 2015 . In Nordhausen he was the first member of his parliamentary group to open a citizens' office.

On April 15, 2015, the AfD parliamentary group announced that Gentele had been excluded from the parliamentary group and justified this with a broken relationship of trust and behavior that was grossly damaging to the faction. Gentele himself attributed this step to a newspaper interview in which he had criticized party and parliamentary group leader Björn Höcke . After the exclusion, he intensified his criticism of Höcke and asked him to resign from all offices and to resign from the AfD. Since then, a party expulsion process has been initiated against Gentele. Already in April 2014 he was threatened with exclusion from the AfD. Together with Jens Krumpe and Oskar Helmerich , he joined the Weckruf association founded by party leader Bernd Lucke in 2015 .

After the federal party conference, on July 7, 2015, he announced his departure from the AfD and spoke out in favor of building a new party. After founding the Alliance for Progress and Awakening on July 19, 2015, Gentele announced that she wanted to found a Thuringian regional association of the party and run as deputy head of the state. On October 22nd, 2015 it was announced that Gentele had resigned from the ALFA "for private and personal reasons". In an interview with MDR Info in November 2015, he spoke of a "stab in the back" and stated that he "resigned from the ALFA after the federal executive board made a decision behind [s] his back."

From March 2016 he was a member of the Family Party of Germany and from April 2016 General Secretary of the Thuringian State Association. On July 9, 2016, it was announced that the federal executive had made use of its right of veto and expelled Gentele from the party. The federal party congress on the same day, however, as the highest organ of the party, confirmed the admission of Gentele as a party member; he thus also remained Secretary General of the regional association. Since July 2019 he has been a member of the Democracy Direct party , for which he ran unsuccessfully at number five in the 2019 state election in Thuringia .

Political positions

According to its own statement, Gentele is committed to the "fight against corruption , nepotism and waste of tax money within political offices". He is in favor of reducing the number of members in the Thuringian state parliament by 26 people. He describes the lowering of the hurdles for referendums as his central theme .

Gentele is not one of the signatories of the Erfurt resolution and spoke out against a “ national-conservative course” by the AfD. In an interview in April 2015, he described himself as liberal-conservative and positioned himself “to the right of the CDU ”.

In June 2015 he voted for the abolition of the state education allowance . In general, he mostly votes with the government factions (Left, SPD, Greens), i.e. against CDU and AfD. However, he rejects an important project of the state government: when the preliminary law for implementing the regional reform in Thuringia was put to the vote, Gentele voted against it.
