location

The Siegfriedbrunnen stands in front of the Haus zur Münze , in which the city library is located, about 100 meters southwest of the town hall and almost immediately next to the Trinity Church at the intersection of Hagenstrasse and Marktplatz.

history

The first idea to build a fountain south of the Holy Trinity Church connected to the Nibelungen saga and to call it the Nibelungenbrunnen came from the year 1895 and came from the industrialist and patron Cornelius Wilhelm Heyl of Worms . The Herborn architect Karl Hofmann , who was working in Worms at the time, took up the suggestion and developed a design that was not accepted by the council .

The fountain in its current form was created in 1913 by the Munich sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand . The financial means for the well made of shell limestone were donated by Heyl and his wife Sophie.

The completed fountain was only erected in front of the Cornelianum in 1921 because of the turmoil of the First World War . The Cornelianum was damaged in World War II , later completely demolished and replaced by the Haus zur Münze . The Siegfriedbrunnen remained at its location.

description

It is a heptagonal domed building , on the highest point of which Siegfried the dragon slayer stands with his sword . In this context, the Hagendenkmal , which was created a few years earlier, reminds of Hagen von Tronje and is now located on the banks of the Worms Rhine. The fountain contains elements that are modeled on the Romanesque . The fountain is a cultural monument and is protected under the Rhineland-Palatinate Monument Protection Act.
