Signôra was a municipality in the district of Lugano , Canton Ticino , in Switzerland.

geography

Signôra lies at 994 m above sea level. M. in the upper Val Colla , at the southern foot of the 2116 m above sea level. M. high Gazzirola. The San Lucio Pass (1541 m above sea level) leads from here to the Italian municipality of Cavargna .

history

In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the great vicinìa of Colla, probably with a certain local independence. In 1686 it is mentioned as a municipality; it bought itself out of the obligation to maintain the collegiate church of San Lorenzo in Lugano .

Community merger

In 1956 Signôra merged with the municipalities of Colla , Insone , Piandera and Scareglia to form the new municipality of Valcolla . Today it is part of the city of Lugano . It consists of the previously independent municipalities of Bogno , Certara , Cimadera and Valcolla, which were incorporated into Lugano on April 13, 2013 and are all located in the valley called Val Colla .

Attractions

  • Oratory San Giuseppe renovated in 1819 with wooden altar from Ortisei (1931) with paintings Madonna col Bambino, San Giuseppe, Sant'Antonio di Padova e le anime purganti
  • In 2015 the oratory was renovated inside by Ralf Abati. The former assistant to the Swiss artist HR Giger mixed old traditions with new art. The main attraction are the 4 faceless archangels Gabriel , Uriel , Raphael and Michael who each bear a coat of arms from Ticino , Lugano , Valcolla and Signôra. The oratorio is freely accessible every day.

  • Emilio Campana (* 1874 in Signôra; † after 1920 ibid), priest and doctor of theology 1897, professor at the Minor Seminary in Pollegio ; since 1898 professor of theology at the Lugano seminar with the exception of two interruptions in 1916 and 1919–1920. First episcopal delegate, then promoter Fiscalis of the diocese until 1915. Since 1914 Canon of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Lugano. Author of Maria nel Dogma .
