Sigurður Jónsson (born September 27, 1966 in Akranes ) is a former Icelandic football player who began a coaching career after completing his career.
Career
Sigurður made his debut as a young talent at the age of 15 in 1982 for ÍA Akranes in the 1st deild . The following year he made his debut in the Icelandic national team . In 1984 he moved to Sheffield Wednesday in the First Division . At first he was only supplementary player in the top English division, so that he was awarded to the second division FC Barnsley in the second division the following year . After his return in the summer of 1986 he was used more often, but it was not until the 1988/89 season that he was increasingly on the field and played 28 season games. Then he signed the reigning champions Arsenal FC . Here, however, he was only left with the role of substitute player, to win the championship title again in the 1990/91 season , he contributed in two stakes. In the following season without a single league game, he returned to ÍA Akranes in Iceland in the summer of 1992. By 1995 he was a regular national champion with the club four times in a row, and in 1993 he also won the national cup. In the same year he was named Footballer of the Year.
In 1996 Sigurður moved abroad again, the new club was the Swedish club Örebro SK . In the Allsvenskan he was also a regular at the side of Mirosław Kubisztal , Dan Sahlin and Niclas Rasck . After the end of the 1997 season, he moved to Scotland in the autumn. He played three seasons for Dundee United . In the summer of 2000 he returned to ÍA Akranes again, after another half series in the 1st deild, he ended his active career.
From 2002 Sigurður worked as a trainer. First station was FH Hafnarfjörður , he led the club to sixth place in the table in the first division. From the following season he was in charge of the second division club Víkingur Reykjavík . With this he rose to the elite class, but there he missed relegation with the team. After another season he moved on to UMF Grindavík . There he was released early shortly before the end of the season in view of the impending relegation.
In 2007 Sigurður returned to Sweden. There he took over the coaching position at Djurgårdens IF as the successor to Anders Grönhagen . After two seasons, the club dismissed him in mid-November 2008, one year before his contract expired, due to "not achieving the goals set". In December 2009 he signed a three-year contract valid from the turn of the year with third division relegated Enköpings SK . After he had led the club back to the third-class Division 1 in the second season, the club extended his contract early until the end of 2014. Although the club was the last of its season to descend again, he remained in office.
