description

Vegetative characteristics

Siliquamomum tonkinense grows as a perennial , herbaceous plant that can reach heights of 0.6 to 2 meters. Several clump-forming shoot axes or "pseudostems" go from the branched rhizome . The ligules are hairless.

Each stem usually has three leaves . These are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The petiole is 2.5 to 9 inches long. The simple leaf blade is ovoid-lanceolate with a length of 20 to 55 centimeters and a width of 7 to 14 centimeters with a pointed leaf base and a pointed upper end.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period of Siliquamomum tonkinense extends at least in China over the month of October. At the end, on an approximately 18 centimeter long inflorescence stem, there is a 13 to 14 centimeter large, racemose inflorescence in which the nine to twelve flowers are close together.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and threefold with double, yellowish-white perianths and are attached to an articulated flower stalk. The three unlobed sepals are fused together and are about 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters longer than the corolla tube. The three yellowish white petals are fused into a corolla tube about 2 to 2.5 centimeters long. There are also three yellowish white corolla lobes, which are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long. Only the middle of the 1.1 to 1.2 centimeter long stamens of the inner circle is fertile . The fertile stamen has an about 0.8 centimeters long stamens . The Staminodien of the inner circle to be a circular Labellum grown. The approximately 1.2 to 3.5 centimeters long and equally wide labellum is yellowish white with a dark green and yellow bordered spot in the middle; it is hairless. The lateral staminodes are 0.8 to 2.5 centimeters long and are fused with the labellum at their base. Three fruit leaves are a dreikammerigen and hairless ovary grown. The stylus ends in a scar with a ciliate tip.

The yellow capsule fruits are 12 to 13 centimeters long and around 1 centimeter thick.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

The natural range of Siliquamomum tonkinense is in northern Vietnam and southern China. As far as is known, it comprises around ten locations in the Pingbian district in the Chinese province of Yunnan and the Ba Vì mountain range in northern Vietnam . The species thrives at altitudes of 600 to 800 meters where it grows in the damp and shady undergrowth of dense mixed forests in mountain valleys.

Taxonomy

It was first described as Siliquamomum tonkinense in 1895 by Henri Ernest Baillon in Bulletin Mensuel de la Société Linnéenne de Paris , page 1193.

Hazard and protection

Siliquamomum tonkinense is in the red list of the IUCN out since 2011 as "endangered." The main reasons for endangerment are the destruction of the habitat and the collection of rhizomes by locals and the resulting overexploitation.
