The film evaluation agency in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating: "Particularly valuable". The jury wrote about the director and the film:

“At the beginning of the civil wars in the crumbling Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, the Roma family Heiseni fled from Kosovo to Germany ... The sword of Damocles of deportation hangs over the family, because their residence status is a“ tolerated [...] the one with the The documentary about the Heiseni family made by the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy (Supervision: Thomas Schadt) is a very remarkable and stylistically surprisingly confident work. The young filmmaker Silvana Santamaria managed to build a relationship of trust with her protagonists. The result was a very precise inside view of the family, a precise picture of their problems and family tensions. [...] The film sensitizes for this life story without falling into a "cheap" gesture of concern. He seems unpathetic, documents factual and sober. He is always very close to the people and recognizable on their side ... It remains a film with an “open end”. The shimmy from Duldung to Duldung continues: the floating situation as a permanent trauma. "

Your short film “Standstill” celebrated its world premiere at the 57th Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián .

In 2010 she received the Max Ophüls Prize at the most important film festival for young German film - the film prize of the same name for her documentary “Nirgendwo.Kosovo”.

Berlinale-talents writes:

“Haki (28 yrs) is a Kosovan belonging to the minority group“ Egyptians ”. Haki had lived in Germany for 17 years when he was deported back to Kosovo in 2007, having to leave his German wife and two sons behind. Haki's everyday life is determined by his longing for his family, the tough struggle of making ends meet in the Roma colony “Kolonia Aljibraj” and his hassle with the Albanian police. And of course the traumatic childhood memories of the deaths of his mother and little brother. The ongoing judicial hearings of possibly returning to Germany and the hope of a visit from his family gives Haki strength. But as his oldest son becomes ill and the news from the courts are not promising, his patience wears thin in face of more difficult challenges. "

2010–2011 she was a postgraduate scholarship holder at the Berlin Academy of Arts in the field of film art . During this time she worked as a director together with Mirjam Dolderer on the film "Lovelab" with the actors Demet Gül and Felix Hellmann in the leading roles.

In 2011 she shot the documentary "Alice in the Land of Hope" in Sicily and Lampedusa about the beginning of the refugee crisis in Italy. The concept emerged before the Arab Spring and the associated refugee crisis that began at the end of 2010. All three documentaries (Status tolerated 2008, Nirgendwo.Kosovo 2010, Alice in the Land of Hope 2012) for which Silvana Santamaria also wrote the scripts, were made in collaboration with the editor Gudrun Hanke el-Ghomri ( Of fathers and Sons , Last Men in Aleppo ). Even if the films were commissioned individually, they should be understood as a coherent trilogy in which the topics of displacement, migration and integration are dealt with years before the topic received media attention in Germany.

In 2011 and 2012 she directed the short film "Your letter to his wedding", with Corinna Harfouch in the leading role and Sylvester Groth in a supporting role. The film received positive reviews from both film critics and viewers and won the Caligari Prize of the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy. “The moving documentary by the two German-Turkish directors Ayla Gottschlich and Biene Pilavci is reminiscent of the tear gas plumes and the bloody evacuation of Gezi Park in June 2013 and creates an exciting generational portrait. In June 2013 the two travel “to our parents' homeland”, initially with the intention of “being able to grasp this country better [...] Chronicle of a revolt - one year in Istanbul” is a courageous, personal film depicting this resistance Gives face and is not afraid to combine humor with a decided political stance. "

In 2016 she produced the documentary film “Franco's Heritage - Spain's Stolen Children”, directed by Inga Bremer . The film evaluation agency in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title "Particularly valuable". The jury wrote: “In her extremely exciting documentary film FRANCOS ERBE - SPAIN'S ROBBED CHILDREN, the documentary filmmaker Inga Bremer tells of the grave effects of forced adoptions under Franco's rule in Spain. Politicians, the church and society were all involved - it is accordingly difficult to prosecute those responsible even today. [...] FRANCOS ERBE impressively conveys a highly explosive and complex topic and draws attention to the innocent victims of a dictatorial regime. "

She worked with TV editor Sonja Scheider ( Citizenfour ) for the film "Franco's Legacy - Spain's Stolen Children" . The film was shown at the Shanghai International Film Festival and later broadcast on Arte and BR. It was previously released in art house cinemas across Germany.

Since Reyhanli is surrounded on three sides by the Syrian border, the filming was characterized by constant police checks, as well as the presence of daily hail of bombs right next to the border town. The actors in the film were mainly Syrian children who fled the war across the border.
