Reyhanlı (formerly İrtah and Reyhaniye = paradise garden ) is a Turkish city and a district in the province of Hatay in the eastern Mediterranean region on the Syrian border. Since a regional reform in 2014, the district is identical in terms of area and population to the district town.

Ancient dwellings were discovered in the district, dating from around 6100 BC. Were erected. Later the area was under the hegemony of the Hittites . Since the Turkish rule from the 16th century, Reyhanlı was settled with members of the Turkoman tribes from Ray and from the 19th century with Muhaciren (“ refugees ”) from the Caucasus and Cyprus . The inhabitants today are Turks , Arabs , Turkmens , Circassians and Kurds . Of the 90,000 people who lived in the city in 2011, one in three has now left the city. Today 200,000 people live in the city. Syrians now operate three out of four businesses in Reyhanlı.

Agriculture , mainly cotton , grain , fruit and vegetables and also the textile industry are of economic importance. Many historical finds and sights, e.g. B. the Kızlar Sarayı adorn the city on the banks of the Asi River (Arabic. Nahr al-Asi , ancient Orontes).

2013 attack

On May 11, 2013, a two car bomb attack was committed in the city center. State authorities in Turkey spoke of 51 victims of the attacks, while local sources put up to 300 dead with many injured. At the request of the public prosecutor's office after the attack, a court issued an order stating that the incidents could not be reported - and there was also no public reporting. The Turkish government accused members of the Marxist-Leninist DHKP-C (Revolutionary Liberation Party Front) and the THKP-C of having carried out the bomb attacks. She also claimed that the Syrian secret service was the puller in the background. In a statement, the DHKP-C rejected any involvement in the bomb attacks. And the Syrian government also rejected the accusations and accused the Turkish government of wanting to prepare NATO for intervention in the Syrian conflict.

On May 25, 2013, the RedHack hacker group published a facsimile of a report by the Jandarma military police intelligence agency on the Internet. According to these documents, the authorities had been informed in advance of the bomb attacks and the al-Qaeda- affiliated al-Nusra Front , which fought in the civil war in Syria , was responsible for the bomb attacks .

From the point of view of the Turkish opposition, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government was jointly responsible for developments in the region; it contradicted the government's thesis that the attacks were carried out by left-wing extremists acting on behalf of the Syrian secret service. The government has left the border region to the Syrian rebels. Opposition MP Mehmet Ali Ediboglu from Hatay said the "very professional" attacks indicated the perpetrators of the Syrian Al-Nusra group. The Islamist extremists belonging to the Al-Qaida network detonated the Reyhanli bombs to pull Turkey into war on the side of the Syrian opposition.
