Silvestr Maria Braito

Silvestr Maria Braito (born as Josef Braito , pseudonym Bořita ; born June 14, 1898 in Russe , Bulgaria , † September 25, 1962 in Prague ) was a Czech Catholic priest, Dominican, theologian, poet, literary critic, publicist, founder and editor-in-chief of Journal of Philosophical-Theological Revue .

Life

Braito, the son of an electrical engineer, was orphaned at the age of three and was raised by foster parents in Elbogen near Karlsbad . He later found accommodation with Dominican sisters in Prague. After attending the academic high school, he himself joined the Dominican order in 1915 and took the name of the order Silvester Maria. He then studied two years in Olomouc and one year at the Roman papal religious university as well as philosophy and theology in Belgium . On 17th September 1922 he was ordained a priest.

He taught philosophy in Olomouc and continued his theology studies in Rome in 1924, which he completed in 1930 with a doctorate. From 1930 to 1950 he taught aesthetics and mysticism as a professor at the Olomouc Dominican College. During the Second World War he was head of the Olomouc seminary. On March 16, 1950, Bratio was imprisoned and sentenced to 15 years in prison in Leopoldov for high treason and espionage . As a result of the great amnesty, he was released on May 11, 1960 , severely affected by prison and torture. In 1968 he was rehabilitated post mortem.

Teaching

Braito was one of the leading personalities of Catholic teaching in Moravia , whose sermons and lectures always met with a positive response. His philosophical teaching moved within the framework of Neuthomism .

Works

As a schoolboy he wrote satirical poems and published under the name Bořita in the Olomouc magazine Arche . He founded and directed several Catholic and philosophical magazines and initiated numerous cultural events. His monographs were dogmatic textbooks.
