Sirli Hanni (born October 27, 1985 in Vastseliina ) is an Estonian biathlete .

Athletic career

The student Sirli Hanni has been running biathlon since 1999. She competes for the Vastseliina Sportclub and is trained by Üllar Tah. She has been part of the Estonian national team since 2002 and competes in international competitions for her home country. She made her international debut in an individual race as part of the Junior European Cup in Kontiolahti , where she was 27th. At the start of the 2002/03 season , she started in Östersund for the first time in the biathlon world cup and was 86 in sprint races. In Kościelisko , the Estonian started at her first junior world championships. There she missed a medal as fourth, finished eighth in individual and sprint and sixth in the pursuit. After the good World Cup, it was used more and more in the following World Cup season to gain experience. At the 2004 Junior World Championships in Haute-Maurienne , she won silver in the singles and was fifth in the pursuit after she was eleventh in the sprint. The high point of the season was the first participation in the biathlon world championships . In Oberhof she finished 71st in the sprint and 75th in the individual. At her third Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti in 2005, Hanni won her second medal with a relay bronze. Their placements in individual races, 21st in individual and 22nd in sprint and pursuit, were less good than in previous years. In the summer she competed at the Summer Biathlon World Championships 2005 in Muonio and achieved fifth place with the Estonian relay as the best result. In the sprint she reached 18th place, in the mass start 19th. At the beginning of the next winter season, Hanni achieved her best placement in the Junior European Cup with third place in the sprint in Obertilliach . At her last Junior World Championships in Presque Isle , she could not build on previous successes.

From the 2006/07 season onwards , Hanni only started in the senior division. In her first full season in the adult division, she was 54th in the sprint in Pokljuka, achieving her best result in a single World Cup race. So far it was the only time that she was able to qualify for a pursuit race, which she was unable to finish when the winner Kati Wilhelm lapped it. She also took part in the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz , where she finished 67th in the individual and 77th in the sprint. At the Summer Biathlon World Championships in 2007 in Otepää , she was tenth in the sprint and eleventh in the pursuit in the roller ski competitions, the placements in the cross-country competitions were not quite as good. For the third time at the World Championships , Hanni competed in Östersund in 2008. Your placements as 74th in the individual and 79th in the sprint did not deviate from the usual values. In the 2008/09 season she achieved her best results of the season at the World Championships in Pyeongchang with 59th place in the sprint and 56th place in the pursuit. In the individual competition she was 61st and with the Estonian relay she finished 14th. Her best career result so far was achieved in the 2009/10 season in Hochfilzen , where she was able to improve to 52nd place after placing 54th in the sprint competition in the subsequent pursuit competition. Sirli Hanni took part in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and achieved 84th place in the sprint as the best result. In 2010/11 she only took part in a few World Cup competitions and could not place in any of the 80 best female athletes. After the season, she announced that she would not participate in World Cup competitions in the 2011/12 season and would concentrate on her professional training. A not inconsiderable reason for this was, among other things, the contract extension of the Estonian Biathlon Association with the Latvian trainer Māris Čakars, who has been in charge of the Estonian biathlon team since May 2010. Even during his first year in office, there were repeated inconsistencies and communication difficulties between Čakars and the female athletes Eveli Saue, Kadri Lehtla and Sirli Hanni. Above all, Hanni criticizes that minimal communication is not acceptable for top-class sport. Like Eveli Saue, Hanni continued to train with a reduced volume. Both started once in the World Cup. In Oslo, Hanni took 63rd place in the sprint competition. At the Estonian biathlon championship at the end of March 2012, she surprisingly prevailed in difficult weather conditions in the mass start competition against Lehtla and Saue.
