Skënderaj [ ˌskənˈdɛˑɾaj ] ( Albanian  also  Skënderaji , Serbian Србица Srbica ) is a city and the official seat of the municipality of the same name in northern Kosovo .

etymology

The Albanian name of the city, Skënderaj , is said to be derived from Gjergj Kastrioti (1405–1468), called Skënderbeu or Skanderbeg (in German "Lord / Prince Alexander"), who made a name for himself as a fighter against the Ottomans in the late Middle Ages and is celebrated today by the Albanians as a national hero.

The Serbian name of the city, Srbica , is formed from the root word srb ("Serbe") and the ending -ica , a typical place name ending or suffix with Slavic origin. In today's sense it means “Serbian place”.
