Location Skagen Havn

Skagen Havn is the seaport of Skagen and is located on the Ålbæk Bugt in the Kattegat near Grenen , the northern tip of Jutland . The cargo throughput was around 290,000 tons in 2010 and around 160,000 tons in 2014. With a turnover of industrial fish of more than 200,000 tons (2014), it is Denmark's largest fishing port . In addition, yachts and cruise ships call at the port. The port is an independent company of Frederikshavn Municipality .

Skagen Havn is connected to the railway network and the European route 45 ( Frederikshavnmotorvejen ) can be reached via Primærrute 40 .

Port conditions

On an area of 1,330,000 m², of which 645,000 m² are land and 685,000 m² are water, the quay facilities extend over a total of 6.1 kilometers, of which 580 m are 11 m deep.

When entering the sea in the exterior Vorhafenbecken (Ydre Forhavnsbassin) , the area is divided into a Vesthavn (West Harbor) with five docks and a Østhavn (East Harbor) with two pools. In the middle basin (Mittelbassinet) in Vesthavn between the old pier (Gamle Pier) and Pier 2 is the Skagen Lystbådehavn marina .

The cruise ship quay can be entered up to a maximum draft of 11.0 m . At 90,090 GT and 293.0 m in length, the cruise ship Brilliance of the Seas was the largest ship to have moored here to date.

The mean tidal range fluctuates by 0.3 meters; In the event of a flood triggered by a western storm ( storm flood ), the water level can rise to 1.4 m above mean sea level; After storms in the east, the sea level drops to 0.9 m below normal.

history

Fishing has been the town's main livelihood since the beginning, but it did not have a port, so the fishermen had to pull their boats ashore with a winch. A design from the 1880s, which provided for a double port connected by canals between the Skagerrak and the Kattegat, was discarded. After pressure from the fishermen, a new proposal was worked out in 1888, which formed the basis for a law on the construction of a port passed in 1903.

The tender was won by Gunnarson & Søn og Elzelingen in January 1904. The construction costs were estimated at 1,430,238 crowns . After three and a half years of construction, King Friedrich VIII opened the port on November 19, 1907. At the same time the headquarters of the harbor master, the fish warehouses (Fiskepakhusene) and a customs building designed by the Danish architect Hack Kampmann (1856–1920) were built.

Expansion and expansion of the port

In the early 1930s, more and more fishermen switched to the more lucrative trawl fishing . A port expansion seemed inevitable, so in 1937 a new port basin was completed in the east and a fish auction hall in 1938 . An expansion in the west decided in 1943 was delayed due to the German occupation of Denmark in the Second World War and could only be tackled in 1952. After the completion of a new harbor basin for trawlers , among other things , Skagen Havn was considered the most modern fishing port in the country.

In the 1960s fishing was booming and the port had more than 400 fishing trawlers . As a result, between 1964 and 1979, the area in the east was expanded by 120 ha of land and 14 ha of water for DKK 35 million. This was followed by deepening measures in Vesthavn in 1985 and 1991 and in Østhavn in 1993.

Since the port was sold to Skagen Municipality in 2001, Skagen Havn has been operated as an independent company. The business is run by a seven-person management. With the administrative reform of 2007 , the company became the property of the municipality of Frederikshavn .

The Østhavn was deepened to nine meters in 2005, 2007 and most recently in 2010. In 2006–2007, the Karstensens Skibsværft shipyard built a dry dock between Pier 3 and 4 measuring 135 × 25 × 8 meters, which is designed for ships weighing 7,500 tons. During the same period of time, 110,000 m² of land was gained by backfilling, which was officially inaugurated in 2007 on the occasion of the port's 100th anniversary.

In the course of the construction of a fish terminal from 2007 to 2008, the old auction hall was renovated and a cooling system with a secured cold chain was installed. At the same time, work began on a ro-ro ramp and a 170 m long quay designed for 9 m deep ships in the outer outer harbor basin. The most recent expansion was completed in spring 2015, and cruise ships have also been able to call at the port since then .

Port railway

The port was connected to the Frederikshavn – Skagen railway line by a port railway .
