The feature film Sofie's World , which was produced in Norway in 1999 , is one of the amphibious films . It was directed by Erik Gustavson.

In the dramatic adventure film based on the book Sofies Welt by Jostein Gaarder , Silje Storstein plays Sofie, a student who deals with philosophical questions and thereby gradually realizes the real nature of her world.

action

14-year-old Sofie Amundsen receives letters from a stranger. In the first letter there is only the question “Who are you?”. In a second there is only the question “Where does the world come from?”. Stimulated by these questions, she thinks about herself and the world. She begins to understand what philosophy is and what it means. Soon she also gets to know the writer of the letters. It's the mysterious Alberto Knox. With him she wanders through the exciting history of philosophy, at the end of which she recognizes the real essence of her world and has to question her own existence. She realizes that she is only a fictional character in a fictional story, but also discovers that she exists nonetheless.

Production background

Filming for the film began on February 26, 1998. It was shot at original locations in Norway and Greece . The NRK studios in Oslo were also used. After about 110 days of shooting, the work was finished. When the film was released in 1999, at $ 10 million, it was the most expensive Norwegian film ever made.

The film premiered on August 6, 1999 in Norway. This was followed by the premieres in Denmark (on November 12, 1999), in Sweden (on November 19, 1999), in Germany (on December 2, 1999), in Switzerland (on February 3, 2000), in Japan (on November 29, 1999) July 2000), in Argentina (on November 2, 2000), in Iceland (there as a video premiere) (on November 21, 2000), in the Netherlands (on November 30, 2000), in Mexico (on April 21, 2002) and in Greece (on January 17, 2003).

To what extent the film was dubbed for the countries in question or whether there were subtitles is not always clear. It is noteworthy that the original film was produced in Norwegian, but Alberto Knox, played by the Swedish actor Tomas von Brömssen, speaks Swedish throughout . A DVD version with English subtitles was released around 2005. But as far as Germany is concerned, the matter is clearer, around 2000 a dubbed version was released on video (VHS and DVD).

In addition to the theatrical version, a longer and slightly different cut, multi-part television series version of Sofie's world was produced at the same time . Thus, the film belongs to the so-called amphibious films . The eight-part series was first broadcast in Norway on October 5, 2000. Finland followed on April 12, 2001 and Sweden on June 1, 2001. In Germany, the series was first broadcast on February 15, 2003.
