The Solea is a German fisheries research vessel . The ship is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The ship, which is primarily available to the three fishery research institutes of the Thünen Institute , is managed by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE).
history
The Solea was built in 2003/2004 at the Fr. Fassmer shipyard in Berne -Motzen. The hull was delivered from a Polish shipyard . The keel of the ship was laid on April 10th, the launch on July 12th, 2003. The ship was completed on May 28th, 2004, followed by commissioning in June.
The ship is based in Cuxhaven. The areas of application are in particular the North and Baltic Seas , but also British waters and parts of the Norwegian coastal waters. The task of the ship is to determine the size of the fish stocks and to determine permissible catches. Furthermore, changes in the marine environment and the pollutant content in the sea are to be investigated and environmentally friendly and energy-saving fishing techniques are to be developed.
The fisheries research vessel Solea replaces the fisheries research cutter of the same name, which has been in use for fisheries research since 1974.
Technology and equipment
The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . The ship has an electric motor from Lloyd Dynamowerke as the drive motor. The engine with 950 kW power acts directly on the shaft system and drives a fixed propeller on. The ship reaches a speed of 12.5 knots . The ship also has a bow thruster with an output of 300 kW.
There are two diesel generators on board for the power supply, each with an output of 664 kW and an apparent output of 890 kVA each . In addition, a harbor and emergency generator with 62.5 kVA apparent power was installed.
The ship has three laboratories : a wet laboratory (fish laboratory), in which the entire catch is scientifically evaluated, a chemistry laboratory, in which u. a. Analyzes of water samples and further analyzes of fish samples and biochemical examinations can be carried out, as well as two dry laboratories, which are used in particular to record and evaluate the collected data. The ship is designed for bottom trawling , the beam trawl fishing, the pelagic fisheries and plankton fishing equipped.
The ship is at sea around 300 days a year on average. It is designed so that the research trips can last up to three weeks.
Solea is the quietest of the three German fisheries research vessels. The underwater sound emissions correspond to the requirements of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (according to ICES CRR 209). It is therefore particularly suitable for acoustic inventory surveys.
Namesake of the ship
Solea is named after sole , the Latin name of which is Solea solea .
