Octanitrocubane ( ONC for short ) is a chemical compound with the constitutional formula C 8 (NO 2 ) 8 , which can be used as an explosive .

Octanitrocubane was first in 1999 at the University of Chicago by chemists Philip E. Eaton and Mao-Xi Zhang synthesized .

The molecule has a backbone of eight carbon atoms having a cube form. A nitro group is attached to each carbon atom. It is a derivative of the hydrocarbon cubane , in which the eight hydrogen atoms of the cubane are each replaced by a nitro group .

The high-energy structure of the cube geometry, the high density (for explosives of this type) and the balanced oxygen balance , which causes a complete intramolecular reaction to eight molecules of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and four molecules of nitrogen (N 2 ) when ignited , are one of the prerequisites for an unusually high explosive.

However, due to the high tension in the carbon structure, production is very difficult to accomplish. Octanitrocubane can be prepared from multiply nitrated cubanes by a number of different step-by-step nitration reactions.
