The London Southend Airport ( IATA : SEN , ICAO : EGMC ) is a British commercial airport in Southend-on-Sea , about 60 kilometers east of London .

history

From 1914, there was a base of the Royal Flying Corps on the area of ​​today's London Southend Airport . In the 1960s, the airport was the third largest in Greater London with around 700,000 passengers a year.

In 2008 he was taken over by the Stobart Group . On March 19, 2010, an extensive expansion and modernization program was approved with which London Southend Airport is to become a modern regional airport for the Greater London area, which is also competitive with other London airports . Among other things, the runway will be extended. In addition, a new tower and an airport train station were built.

In April 2012, the second phase of the airport expansion was approved. The terminal building is to be extended by 90 meters to provide space for additional security checks, baggage claim belts , shops and restaurants as well as a departure lounge . The airport's capacity is designed to grow to two million passengers per year by 2020. In 2014, 1,102,358 passengers were carried. In October 2012, a Holiday Inn chain hotel opened at the airport.

Since July 2012, London-Southend has been the city's sixth official IATA airport alongside Heathrow , Gatwick , Stansted , Luton and City .

In August 2013, London-Southend was voted the airport with the highest customer satisfaction in the country in a survey. At the same time, the completion of a terminal expansion to increase capacity was announced for the end of 2013.

Location and transport links

The airport is about three kilometers north of Southend-on-Sea and about 60 km east of central London . It is linked to the M25 Motorway via the A127 expressway .

Since July 2011 it has its own train station called Southend Airport , which Abellio Greater Anglia connects with Liverpool Street train station, among others . The travel time to London is around 50 minutes.

Airlines and Destinations

In April 2012, shortly after the opening of the expanded airport, the low-cost airline easyJet opened a base at London Southend Airport and stationed three Airbus A319-100s here. Initially ten European destinations were flown to, including Belfast , Amsterdam , Berlin-Schönefeld and Barcelona . In addition, Aer Lingus Regional flew from London-Southend to Dublin and earlier also to Waterford as another airline . In October 2012, the range of flights was expanded by OLT Express Germany , which was no longer available due to the dissolution of OLT. With the 2014/2015 winter flight schedule, the Swiss airline SkyWork Airlines switched from London City to Southend and flew to it twice a day from Bern . In addition, the British airline Flybe has been heading to Münster / Osnabrück Airport every day since June 2014.

On June 1, 2015, Adria Airways resumed the seasonal connection to Maribor , which was closed by Ryanair on March 27, 2008 (until September 30, 2015).

From October 2018 Adria Airways will fly to the airport from Paderborn / Lippstadt .

Wizz Air also flies internationally from Southend.
