Mascha from Moscow and Maria from Kraków , who works in Berlin , talk to each other on the phone. In your phone call, you remember your incredible experiences at the 10th World Festival in Berlin .

At that time Mascha traveled with her folklore ensemble from Moscow to Berlin. She met the reporter Alexej in Moscow and finally saw him again in Berlin. During the World Festival, she sublet with worker Hans.

During the World Festival, Hans again meets a woman who looks like Mascha, but introduces herself to him as Maria. Maria comes from Kraków and works in a radio factory in Berlin. Hans goes dancing with Maria because he thinks Mascha and Maria are the same name and therefore thinks that he is going out with his lodger. When he wants to take her home, Maria reacts negatively. Later he sees Mascha and Alexej kissing and reacts annoyed. The men finally speak out and decide to ditch Mascha or Maria, who both think are the same woman, because she only played with both men. The women are not aware of any guilt. During a performance by Masha, Maria is also sitting in the audience and they are now coming together for the first time. They show their friends around a little before they reveal the secret of their identical appearance and reconcile the men.

Mascha and Maria's phone call ends. They promise to meet again at the next world festival in Havana . You can then rule out confusing the two, as Maria has meanwhile dyed her hair blonde.

The preparation and shooting of So Many Songs, So Many Words took place in 1973 because the original recordings of the Xth World Festival in 1973 were to be used for the film. Some scenes were improvised during the festival, other scenes that were supposed to play during the festival were recorded afterwards. Renate Holland-Moritz wrote ironically in a review: “The scenes that were re-shot in the studio or at original locations are particularly moving. Our heroes, who have been soaked up, cavort in the deserted Friedrichshain, enter half-empty dance halls and find a place in every bar. This is exactly how you remember it from the days of the World Festival! That Berlin was bursting at the seams [...] we must have dreamed. "

The film was not finished until three years after shooting began and had its premiere on July 29, 1976 in the Schwerin “Schauburg”.

Dean Reed appears in the film with the song of the World Festival We Say Yes . Sports reporter Marian Homrighausen can be seen as a commentator on the horse race in which Mascha takes part instead of Maria .
