In 1906 the clubs FC Preußen Wilhelmshaven , FC Wilhelmshaven and FC Viktoria Wilhelmshaven, all of which had been founded the year before, merged to form FC Germany Wilhelmshaven . Six years later, the Heppenser Ballspielverein, founded in 1908, joined FC Germany. In the spring of 1924, FC Deutschland merged with VfB Wilhelmshaven to form Wilhelmshavener SV 06 . On August 21, 1939, this merged with VfL Rüstringen to form Wilhelmshaven 05. VfL Rüstringen was again formed on June 18, 1921 as a spin-off from SV Comet Rüstringen, which was founded in 1905 as FC Comet Rüstringen .

In 1924 the WSV took over the place in the first-class Weser / Jade regional league from VfB . Initially, the team was one of the top clubs in the Jade relay team and, after the football revolution, was the only club in the city to be included in the newly created Weser / Jade Oberliga . The WSV got out of this and never returned. In 1939 the WSV merged with VfL Rüstringen.

The new club was included in the first-class Gauliga Niedersachsen-Nord for the 1939/40 season, after the military sports clubs MSV Jäger 7 Bückeburg , MSV Lüneburg and Luftwaffe SV Wolfenbüttel withdrew their teams due to the war . After two years in midfield in the league, the sporting upswing began in the 1940s, closely related to guest players such as Paul Janes and Karl Barufka .

In the Gauliga Weser-Ems introduced in 1942, the 05er were the dominant club. The 05er secured the first championship with 151 goals scored and only one defeat. The highlight was a 25-0 win against ASV Blumenthal . In the final round of the German championship , the team was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a 1: 4 against FC Schalke 04 . A year later, the team defended their Gau title and did not lose a game. Another 25: 0 win, this time against VfL Oldenburg . At the national level , a 2-1 win after extra time over Eintracht Braunschweig was achieved before the Luftwaffe-Sportverein Hamburg prevailed 4-2 in the replay of the round of 16 .

After the end of the war, the association was dissolved and only re-established in 1952. In the meantime, the TSR Olympia had taken over the sporting leadership role in the city. In 1960 he was promoted to the amateur league 1 . Three years later, the 05 secured the championship and were promoted to the Lower Saxony-West amateur league . As runner-up, the team qualified for the newly created Lower Saxony State League .

In this the club played only a minor role and rose in 1968 in the Verbandsliga Nord . Two years later, the 05 would have been relegated from this. But since the association league champions Kickers Emden rose to the state league, the Wilhelmshavener had to play a playoff against Brockeswalder SV , which was won 3-1 in the neutral Bremervörde . Two years later, Wilhelmshaven 05 merged with Germania Wilhelmshaven to form SV Wilhelmshaven .
