Spanish Fort is an American city in Baldwin County , Alabama . Spanish Fort had 5,423 people at the 2000 census. Spanish Fort counts as a suburb of Mobile .
Demographics
In the census of the United States in 2000 had Spanish Fort 5,423 inhabitants, 2,035 households, and 1,518 families. 93.64% of the population were white and 4.37% were African-Americans. 26.2% of the citizens were under 18 years old, 17.7% older than 65 years. The median age was 41 years. The average income amounted to 27,081 US dollars . Only 2.8% lived below the poverty line.
history
After Mobile was founded by the French in 1712 , a trading post was established. In the French and Indian War took Britain a large area along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico , a so 1763 also Spanish Fort. In the American Revolutionary War who took Spanish Mobile and the surrounding areas, and built on the former trading post of the French a Presidio , a fortress . This "Spanish fort" (Engl .: Spanish Fort ) was later the scene of a British counter-attack. During the British-American War , Spanish Fort, as it was now called, became American property. During the Civil War , Spanish Fort was reinforced by Mobile as an eastern defense structure. Spanish Fort was the site of the Battle of Spanish Fort in the Civil War between March 27 and April 8, 1865 .
On July 19, 1993, Spanish Fort became a city.
One place in town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 30, 2019), the ghost town of Blakeley .

To the southeast of Spanish Fort are Daphne (5 km) and Loxley (17 km). To the south are Fairhope (16 km), Point Clear (19 km), Silverhill (21 km) and Robertsdale (24 km).
