Spinning Around ( dt. "Turn in circles") is a song by Australian singer Kylie Minogue . It was released on June 19, 2000 as the first single from their seventh studio album, Light Years .

Background and origin

With the release of their sixth studio album Impossible Princess , Minogue turned away from their previous typical style of music, dance pop . Although this album was successful in her home country and also reached the top 10 of the UK album charts, it received negative reviews. She was fired from her then music label Deconstruction and signed with Parlophone . For her seventh studio album, Light Years , the singer decided to go back to her roots and turned to dance pop again.

Spinning Around was written by Ira Shickman, Osborne Bingham, Kara DioGuardi and Paula Abdul and produced by Mike Spencer. Originally the song was intended as a recording for Abdul's own studio album. After the album didn't come out, Abdul passed the song on to Minogue. For DioGuardi this was the first big project as a songwriter. In an interview, Minogue said that while she likes to write songs herself, she doesn't care about her studio album Light Years as long as it contains the best songs there is. She received a demo recording of Spinning Around from her A&R manager , who found the song "perfect" for the singer. After listening to the demo, Minogue agreed to the recording, for them the song had the potential to become a hit. Spinning Around was released as the lead single on the album on June 19, 2000.

Musical and content

Like most of the songs on the Light Years album , Spinning Around is a dance-pop song with distinctive influences from disco music . The song, composed in four-four time and in F sharp minor , has a tempo of 120 beats per minute . Minogue's vocal range extends from F3 to C5. The song is structured in the classic verse - chorus mode. A bridge is built in between the second and third repetitions of the chorus . Spinning Around is about reinventing Minogue. The lines of text "I'm spinning around, Move out of my way, [...] I'm breaking it down, I'm not the same" ( German : "I'm going in circles, get out of my way, [ …] I'll explain it to you now, I'm not the same ") and" Mistakes that I made have given me the strength to really believe "( Eng .:" The mistakes I made gave me the strength to really believe ") make it clear that Minogue had changed and learned from their mistakes. Allmusic's Chris True believes this song is a reference to Minogue's 1997 release of Impossible Princess .

Reviews

Joachim Gauger from Laut.de thinks Spinning Around is a less successful song on Minogue's studio album Light Years . "You can bend the first five tracks straight away," stated the critic and suspected that the success was based on the provocative music video. Siobhan Grogan of the New Musical Express wrote, " Spinning Around is made from the same sizzling, dizzying disco-pop that made Kylie famous." Jason Lipshutz from Billboard magazine wrote about Spinning Around : "With this song Minogue returns to uncomplicated pop after the 1997 ambitious album Impossible Princess". " Spinning Around is a fun and string-laden explanation of the mistake she made in 1997," wrote Allmusic critic Chris True.

Music video

The music video for Spinning Around was shot by British director Dawn Shadforth . It shows Minogue in tiny gold hot pants dancing in a night club . By scantily clad in the video Minogue was Boulevard -Press on their butt attention. The “legendary” golden hot pants were donated by Minogue in 2014 to the Arts Center Melbourne for the Performing Arts Collection exhibition . To date, the video has been viewed over 8 million times on YouTube (as of February 2017).

Commercial win

Spinning Around was commercially more successful than the single releases from the previous album. On July 1, 2000, the song entered the British single charts at number 1 . This marked Minogue's fourth number-one success as a solo artist in the UK and the first since the single, Tears on My Pillow , released in 1990 . In the second week of the chart the song fell back to number 3, in the third week of the chart Spinning Around dropped out of the top 10. In total, the song spent 13 weeks on these charts. For over 200,000 copies sold in the UK, the piece was awarded a silver record by the British Phonographic Industry . By 2014, Spinning Around had sold over 300,000 times there. In Minogue's homeland Australia , the singer also had a number one success , here too the song went straight to number 1 in the Australian singles charts and spent a week at the top. It was the fourth number one success for Minogue in their homeland. The song received a platinum record from the Australian Recording Industry Association .

Spinning Around was less successful in German-speaking countries . In the German single charts , it entered the 81st place on July 10, 2000. In the fourth week of the chart, the highest ranking was achieved with 62nd place, but no higher placements. After nine weeks, the song said goodbye to the charts. In the Austrian Ö3 Austria Top 40 there was no placement at all. In the Swiss charts , the top 10 was also missed with 34th place.

At the ARIA Music Awards 2000, Spinning Around won the Best Pop Release category .
