- April / May: On the occasion of the Great Exhibition in London, chess master Howard Staunton organizes the first international chess tournament in the Crystal Palace . The German Adolf Anderssen wins the chess tournament in London in 1851 against 15 competitors.
- June 21 : In a friendship game outside of the tournament, Adolf Anderssen plays the " Immortal Game " against Lionel Kieseritzky .

- August 22nd : The US-American schooner America , which was specially built in the same year and led by skipper Richard “Old Dick” Brown , wins the One Hundred Sovereigns Cup off the British Isle of Wight against 15 British yachts. The crew donated the won cup to the New York Yacht Club six years later and with this award founded the America's Cup , which, however, was not held for the first time until 1870 .
