Alpinism
- August 1st : A rope team led by the Englishman Charles Hudson succeeds in the first ascent of the Gornerhorn , the highest mountain in Switzerland . This is considered to be the beginning of the golden age of alpinism .

- February 7th : Ernst Burow and eight friends found the oldest German sailing club, the SC RHE, in the Burow house in Königsberg in Prussia .
