- June 3 : Francis Thomas Gregory becomes the first European to climb the largest monolith on earth in Western Australia . Shortly afterwards Gregory named the mountain Mount Augustus , taking his brother, the discoverer Augustus Gregory, as his namesake.
- June 29th : Johann Jakob Weilenmann manages the first tourist ascent of the Muttler in the Samnaun group in Graubünden, Switzerland .
- August 11th : Christian Almer , Charles Barrington and Peter Bohren succeed in the first ascent of the Eiger in the Bernese Alps , which up until then had been considered impassable .
- September 11th : A group of four mountaineers stands for the first time in the Valais Alps on the cathedral , the highest mountain that lies entirely within Switzerland.
