As in the previous year, the sporting year 1861 was marked by gymnastics in Germany and by golf on the British Isles . But the soccer game is also enjoying increasing popularity on several continents .

Cricket, soccer, gymnastics, fencing
The boom in gymnastics that began in Germany the previous year continued in 1861 . The number of gymnasts throughout Germany has risen from around 30,000 in the previous year to around 100,000. Many gymnastics clubs are set up (again), including for political reasons in the previous year from the Frankfurter Turnverein breakaway Frankfurt Turngemeinde which Gummersbacher gymnastics club that Turnerschaft Kronach that Turngemeinde Heidenheim and the men gymnastics club Gifhorn . Outside Europe, there will be ups of sports clubs: On 18 July, in Montevideo from British in Uruguay of Montevideo Cricket Club established with an associated football department. And Boston students found the Oneida Football Club as the first football club in the United States, which only lasted just under five years, but did not lose a single football game during that time . The team even remains without conceding a goal. After its successful tour of North America in 1859 , the English cricket team set sail from Liverpool on October 20 for a tour to Australia. The team arrives in Melbourne on December 24th.

Canon George Ogilvie, the new Rector of Diocesan College in Cape Town, brings rugby from England to South Africa .

The first congress of the West German Chess Federation (WDSB) will be held in Düsseldorf. However, no master is played out yet.

Winter sports
Trysilgutten , the world's oldest ski club , is founded in Trysil in Norway on May 20th .
The Frankfurt ice skating club is founded. This makes it the oldest German ice skating club .
Rockclimbing
On July 18, the mountain guide Johann Josef Benet, together with Leslie Stephen , FF Tuckett , Melchior Anderegg and Peter Perren, managed the first ascent of Mont Blanc over the Dôme du Goûter , today's normal route.
