- April 19 : On the initiative of Rudolf Theodor Simler , 35 gentlemen founded the Swiss Alpine Club in the Olten railway station buffet . The Grünhornhütte will later be built as the first mountain hut in Switzerland .
- August 12th : Melchior Anderegg , Florence Crauford Grove and others succeed in the first ascent of the 4171 m high Dent d'Hérens in the Valais Alps .
- August 16 : Melchior Anderegg , Florence Crauford Grove and others succeed in the first ascent of the 4432 m high Parrotspitze in the Monte Rosa massif.
- August 29th : Paul Grohmann and Francesco Lacedelli succeed in the first ascent of the 3244 m high Tofana di Mezzo in the Dolomites .
- September 7th : Together with others, Abraham Roth climbs the Bifertenstock in the Glarus Alps for the first time .
- October 23 : In Turin is at the initiative of Quintino Sella the Italian Alpine Club was founded.
- Ludwig Barth and Leopold Pfaundler are the first to climb the Pfaffenschneide , a few days later Joseph Anton Specht and Alois Tanzer follow in the course of the ascent of the Zuckerhütl.
- Josef Anton Specht and mountain guide Alois Tanzer manage the first ascent of the Zuckerhütl , the highest mountain in the Stubai Alps in Tyrol .
- Ludwig von Barth and Leopold Pfaundler climb the Eastern Seespitze in the Stubai Alps for the first time .

- The fencing club Offenbach is founded.
Football, rugby
- October 26th : The English Football Association is founded in London as the first football association in the world and, in further meetings until December, draws up the first official football rules based on the Cambridge rules of 1848 . This means the separation of football and rugby .
- December 19 : A first test match under the new rules is played between enthusiastic members of the FA who do not want to wait for January 2, 1864, the official date for the first football game , which ends goalless.
- The army football club Royal Engineers is founded.

On March 28th, Oxford wins the 20th Boat Race against Cambridge in a time of 23'06 ″ and thus draws the same number of victories. Both universities have recorded 10 victories since the competition began.
The Oxford University College wins the Grand Challenge Cup of the Henley Royal Regatta in London.
