- June 28th : A rope team consisting of Adolphus Warburton Moore , Horace Walker and Jakob Anderegg succeeds in the first ascent of Piz Roseg in the Graubünden Bernina group .
- June 29th : Edward Whymper , Christian Almer and Franz Biner are the first to climb the Aiguille Verte , a four-thousand-meter peak in the Alps .
- July 6th : Adolphus Warburton Moore , Horace Walker and Jakob Anderegg succeed in the first ascent of the Ober Gabelhorn . The losers followed the next day in the race for the summit, Francis Douglas , Peter Taugwalder and Joseph Viennin on their third attempt.
- July 14 : The first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper , Lord Francis Douglas , Charles Hudson , Douglas Robert Hadow, Michel Croz and Peter Taugwalder father and son succeeds. Four alpinists are killed on the descent.
- July 14 : The highest mountain in Vorarlberg , the Große Piz Buin in the Silvretta main ridge, is climbed for the first time by a group of four mountaineers led by Josef Anton Specht and Johann Jakob Weilenmann . On July 17th, the same group was the first to climb the Crast 'Agüzza in the Bernina group .
- August 7th : Peter Michel , Edmund von Fellenberg , Peter Egger and Peter Inäbnit succeed in the first ascent of the Gross Grünhorn .
- August 22nd : Jules Jacot and two mountain guides manage the first ascent of the Silvrettahorn .
- August 28th : Julius Payer and Johann Pinggera manage to climb the Vertainspitze for the first time together with an unknown porter .
- September 7th : Julius Payer and Johann Pinggera are the first to climb Monte Cevedale , at 3778 m the third highest mountain in the Ortler massif and the highest mountain in Trentino after Ortler and Königspitze .
- September 11th : Johann Jakob Weilenmann is the first to climb Mont Blanc de Cheilon in the Valais Alps with mountain guide J. Felley .

- April 8th : Oxford defeated Cambridge in the Boat Race in 21'24 ″.
- July 28 : Yale wins the Harvard-Yale regatta for the second time in a row in a time of 19'09 ".
Shooting sports
- 16th bis 23. July : On the Bürgerweide in Bremen the place of the German Shooting Federation organized Bundesschießen instead. The Second German Federal Shooting in Bremen is attended by around 14,000 people, making it one of the largest events in Germany before the establishment of the Reich.
Winter sports
- The world's first ice sailing club is being built on the Hudson River .
- The American figure skater Jackson Haines develops all-metal ice skates that are directly connected to the shoe sole.

- Gustav Richard Neumann wins the chess tournament of the Berlin Chess Society .
- The Englishman William Cail introduces the rugby game in Stuttgart and Bad Cannstatt .
- John Graham Chambers developed the Queensberry rules in boxing , named after his sponsor John Sholto Douglas, 9th Marquess of Queensberry , with which the bare-knuckle fight should be abolished according to the London Prize Ring Rules .
