- July 10 : GE Forster with Jakob Anderegg and Hans Baumann are the first people to climb the Gspaltenhorn in the Bernese Alps .
- August 13th : Paul Grohmann is the first person to climb the Langkofel , the main summit of the Langkofel group in the Val Gardena Dolomites .
- August 21 : Paul Grohmann and two local mountain guides manage the first ascent of the Großer Zinne in the Sexten Dolomites .
- August 30th : Two local mountain guides and the British economist Alfred Marshall succeeds in the first ascent of the Karlesspitze in the Ötztal Alps .

- November 7th : The world's first international road bike race takes place on the Paris-Rouen route . James Moore wins the 123 km race in a time of 10:45 hours.
- Young Tom Morris wins for the second time The Open Championship in golf . Second place goes to his father, Old Tom Morris .
Founding of clubs
- 5th January : The Scottish football club FC Kilmarnock is founded as a cricket club.
- April 17th : The Eimsbüttel Velocipede Club is the first German cycling club to be established in Altona / Elbe . On September 10th, as part of an industrial exhibition, the club is holding a first race with participants from France, Denmark and England.
- June 1 : After professional teams were approved for the first time last year by the National Association of Baseball Players , the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first baseball team consisting entirely of professionals, is founded. In the same year the team achieved the only “perfect season” in baseball history with 65-0 wins.
- June 12 : The first water driving association in Switzerland, the Limmat Club Zurich , is founded.
