- June 25 : Adolphus Warburton Moore , Horace Walker , Edward Whymper , Christian Almer and Michel Croz succeed in the first ascent of the Barre des Écrins , the highest peak in the French Dauphiné Alps .
- July 9 : Edward Whymper and Michel Croz are the first to climb Mont Dolent together with others .
- July 15 : A rope team led by Edward Whymper succeeds in the first ascent of the Aiguille d'Argentière in the Mont-Blanc group .
- July 21 : Melchior Anderegg , together with Frank Walker , Lucy Walker , Horace Walker and Jakob Anderegg, is the first to climb the 3699 meter high Balmhorn in the Bernese Alps .
- August 3 : The first fully recognized ascent of the Königspitze in the Ortler Alps is achieved by the English alpinist Francis Fox Tuckett with his companions TF and EN Buxton and the Swiss mountain guides Christian Michel and Franz Biner. Already 1854 has Stephan Steinberger claims the first ascent in itself, but this was disputed by some climbers.

- The Neue Berliner Schachzeitung appears to compete with Max Lange's chess newspaper, which moved to Leipzig in 1860 , after Gustav Richard Neumann had convinced the Berlin publisher Julius Springer that the Prussian capital should not remain without a chess magazine. The editors are initially Neumann and Adolf Anderssen .
