The VfL Horneburg is a sports club from the Lower Saxon city of Horneburg in the Elbe-Weser triangle . The club was created through the merger of MTV von 1861 Horneburg and Horneburger Sportclub e. V. and, according to its own information, is the largest association in the Horneburg community with around 1450 members . It offers nine sports departments: badminton , soccer , handball , judo , athletics , cycling , table tennis , gymnastics and volleyball .

Sports facilities

The club has various sports facilities for its sports offer in Horneburg . The sports hall in the municipality on Hermannstrasse is the largest in the entire municipality of Horneburg and is equipped with large auditoriums. There is space for 550 spectators. Right next to it is the VfL hall, which is used as a multi-purpose hall.

There are several football pitches and the athletics facility at the sports facility in Blumenthal.

In 2016 the former sports studio "Vitalo" in Schützenweg was acquired by the club and renamed "VfL Sport-Treff". Since then, a constantly expanding sports and fitness program (including equipment training and yoga) has been taking place in the premises.

The handball department

The club's handball department was founded in 1971. The origin was a student working group at the Realschule Horneburg. After a few years, the division grew significantly from 1978 onwards. The handball division celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021. The club became known in the district of Stade and Lower Saxony , particularly due to its success in the men's, women's and youth division in handball. The adult teams became more and more sporty around 2000 and were the only club in the region that managed to allow women and men to play in the then regional handball league (3rd division).

Men's area

Nationally known, the club is primarily for his first men's handball team in the seasons 2002/03 , 2006/07 and 2007/08 in the handball Regional , aground, who was then the third-highest division, and in 2000 , 2007 and 2009 at the 1 . Main round of the DHB Cup participated. Since the 2018/20 season, the men's team has been playing again in the Nordsee Association League of the Lower Saxony Handball Association .

In the 2002/03 season, the first men's handball team of VfL Horneburg occupied 15th place in the Regionalliga Nord and thus rose again to the Oberliga Nordsee.

Ladies area

VfL's first women's handball team also played in the regional league from 2000 to 2004 . From 1992 to 1996, the former 223-time German national player Stefanie Melbeck played for VfL Horneburg. Since the 2019/2020 season, the women's team has been back in the fourth-highest division, the Oberliga Nordsee from the Lower Saxony handball association .

Youth area

The female youth A became German runners-up in 1992 around the former national player Melanie Schliecker and Stefanie Melbeck . In the 2019/2020 season, the male B-youth of coach Stefan Hagedorn reached the quarter-finals of the German championship of the German handball association for the first time.

The division of the club has also been providing several youth players to the selection teams of the Lower Saxony handball association for several years .
