Forerunner of the Olympic Games
- February 25 : The Wenlock Agricultural Reading Society decides to do something to improve the physical and mental health of its own people and founds The Olympian Class . The first games will take place on the Wenlocker Rennbahn on October 22nd and 23rd . It is a mix of athletics and traditional sports such as quoits (ring-throwing), soccer and cricket , but competitions such as wheelbarrow races are also held.
Alpinism
- September 13 : The 4,048 m high Piz Bernina is climbed for the first time by the mountaineering group consisting of Johann Wilhelm Coaz and Jon and Lorenz Ragut Tscharner, after they have received the order from the Swiss Office for Topography to measure the then unnamed summit.
