The Spremberger Stadtbahn was a small urban railway in Spremberg , which had three operating parts: the standard-gauge connecting railway between the main station and the city center, a meter-gauge mine railway that began in the "coal station" on the western edge of the city and a meter-gauge urban railway that was used as an industrial siding with numerous siding in the Served urban area.

For its line , which opened on December 31, 1867 , the Berlin-Görlitzer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BGE) built its station about two kilometers east of Spremberg city center. Since the Prussian State Railways did not establish a rail connection to the city center even after the nationalization of the BGE in 1882, the city of Spremberg itself took the initiative and, through the railway construction and operating company Vering & Waechter, had a three-kilometer-long connecting line from the state station, which was now referred to as the Ostbahnhof to build the city station. Freight traffic began on October 1, 1897, followed by passenger traffic on January 21, 1898. In line with increasing demand, the timetable was compressed to 16 train pairs per day by the summer of 1914.

In the meantime, on October 1, 1907, the Prussian State Railways had put a 14-kilometer-long railway line into operation from the west, which branched off from the Neupetershain – Hoyerswerda railway at the Proschim-Haidemühl station and ended at Spremberg's western station. In 1914, five pairs of passenger trains ran here every day. On April 1, 1908, a track connection for the transfer of freight wagons was established between the Westbahnhof and the Stadtbahn.

Although a railcar had been procured in 1925 and the 1927 summer timetable recorded 19 to 20 trips on workdays, during the global economic crisis on October 15, 1932, rail operations were stopped and the route was subsequently dismantled. The reason for this was the construction of a road from the city center to the train station as part of a job creation program.

Narrow gauge railway

At about the same time as the passenger traffic on the connecting line, a large number of sidings were put into operation in the city in the winter of 1897/98, covering a route length of eight kilometers. With the help of trolleys, standard-gauge freight wagons could be transported from the city station to 56 factories. A connection to the coal railway station was also established in this way. The statistics from 1940 show a route length of 10.33 kilometers, 250 meters of which are in standard gauge. Up to the end of 1956 there was freight transport with trolleys. At this time, the operation of the sidings in the city center and overall operation on the Spremberg light rail also ended. Since the tracks were in the public street space, there was more and more mutual hindrances with the rest of the traffic.

In 1928 the vehicle fleet still comprised ten steam locomotives , two passenger cars , a baggage car and 111  freight cars for both parts of the company. In 1940 there were seven locomotives for the narrow-gauge railway, including No. 11 and No. 12 , and 105 freight cars.

The urban railway was operated by the Spremberg municipal works (Lausitz). They remained so until the end of 1956; the railway was therefore not subordinated to the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

Coal railway

From the coal station, Heinrichsfelder Straße, goods traffic was started on January 21, 1898 on the first section of the route to the pits “Anna”, “Gustav Adolf” and “Brigitta” near Pulsberg and Terpe . The second section to the Clara pit and the Werminghoff briquette factory in Haidemühl followed in July 1924. A route length of 15 kilometers was reached. Passenger traffic on the coal railway only began in 1947, when the parallel Reichsbahn line from the Westbahnhof to Proschim-Haidemühl was shut down. It was given up again at the end of 1952, followed by coal transport a year later.

Section I.

Transport of people, dogs, luggage and express goods from the city station to Spremberg-Ost or vice versa.

§ 1. The fare for one person in 2nd carriage class is 200 pfennigs and in 3rd carriage class 130 pfennigs. A monthly ticket costs 52 marks or 32.50 marks, a 3rd grade student card 15.50 marks. Children under the age of 4 enjoy free travel and children between the ages of 4 and 10 pay half of the above rates. Unaccompanied children under the age of 4 are excluded from transportation.

§ 2. The transport of a dog accompanied by a traveler costs 130 pfennigs. For the transport of luggage and express goods, 130 pfennigs are charged for 1 - 30 kilograms and 50 pfennigs for every 10 kilograms - even partial ones - .

§ 3. The same fees are charged for the storage of travel and hand luggage as for the Reichsbahn. Storage takes place under the same conditions.

Section II

Freight transport

§ 4. The general cargo for express and freight goods from the city station to Spremberg-Ost or vice versa is 80 pfennigs for every 50 kilograms - even if only started. Minimum freight 130 pfennigs.

§ 5. For the transport of a wagonload, the following is charged for every 100 kilograms - even just started -:

a) from the city station to Spremberg-West or vice versa 40 pfennigs: for potatoes only 24 pfennigs
b) from the city station to Spremberg-Ost or vice versa 80 pfennigs: for potatoes only 36 pfennigs
c) from the hard stone works and Lindengarten to Spremberg-Ost or vice versa 50 pfennigs
d) from the hard stone works and Lindengarten to Spremberg-West and to the Stadtbahnhof or vice versa 80 pfennigs

The minimum weight to be calculated for a truckload is 500 kilograms and the minimum freight to be charged for a truckload or a special general cargo wagon is 30 marks in all cases.

§ 6. The transport of full-gauge wagons from the city station to the rail connections in the city or vice versa is carried out on trolleys , provided that the transport is technically possible according to the decision of the operations administration. Rollbock fees are charged for every 100 kilograms, even if only partially, of 90 pfennigs, for potatoes only 32 pfennigs, but in all cases at least 30 marks for each car. These fees are only charged once if the car is rolled up loaded and returned empty or returned empty rolled up and loaded. On request, general cargo wagons can also be transported in the same way against payment of the minimum freight (Section 5, Paragraph 2) and the aforementioned roll-head charges.

§ 7. Full-track freight wagons can also be transported on trestles if there are no operational concerns:

a) from the city station to the pits “Anna” and “Consul” or vice versa.
b) from the city train station to the siding of the current “Hope III” mine at the former “Gustav Adolf” mine or vice versa.

For this purpose, in addition to the freight (§ 5) and the roller block fee (§ 6), an additional freight is charged, which amounts to 100 kilograms each - even just started

to a) 50 pfennigs, but at least 50 marks for a car,
to b) 60 pfennigs, but at least 60 marks for a car.

For brickworks, however, for transport from the Mittag or Meher brickworks to Spremberg-West or East, in addition to the roll-head charges (§ 6) for each 100 kilograms - even just started - are charged:

a) to Spremberg-West 65 pfennigs, but at least 65 marks for a car.
b) to Spremberg-Ost 80 pfennigs, but at least 80 marks for a car.

§ 8. The transport of the raw coal and briquettes from the three pits "Anna", "Consul" and "Hope III" to the coal station and the sidings in the city takes place in narrow-gauge coal wagons of the city railway. Other goods can also be allowed to move to and from these pits.

The narrow-gauge tram cars may only be loaded:

a) Car No. 11 - 40 each with 79 hectoliters or 6500 kilograms,
b) Car No. 41 - 50, each with 84 hectoliters or 6500 kilograms
c) Car No. 51 - 56 (tipping car) each with 69 hectoliters or 5200 kilograms
d) Cars No. 57 - 85 each with 84 hectoliters or 6500 kilograms

The freight is calculated for raw coal for one hectolitre each - even if it has been started - and for briquettes or other goods for every 100 kg - even if it has only been started. It amounts to:

a) from the pits “Anna” and “Consul” to the railway siding in the city or vice versa for 1 hectolitre of coal - 140 pfennigs - even if it has been started - or for 100 kilograms of briquettes, etc. 2,20 marks;
b) from the "Hope III" pit to the railway siding in the city or vice versa for 1 hectolitre of coal - even if it has been started - 1.50 marks or for every 100 kilograms of briquettes - even if only started - 2.20 marks;
c) from all three pits to the brickworks noon or Meher as in a.

The minimum freight payable for a narrow-gauge light rail vehicle is 40 marks in all cases - even if it is only partially loaded. In addition to the above freight rates, a special tipping wagon fee of 6 marks for the wagon is levied for the use of a coal dump truck.

§ 9. For the requested transfer of a full or narrow-gauge wagon from one siding to another siding, a conversion fee of 40 marks is to be paid. In all other cases, for each wagon change or shift requested by the recipient or caused by his fault - regardless of whether it is a full-track or narrow-gauge car - a shift fee of 20 marks is charged for each car. If the postponement is carried out, especially by a requested machine, the postponement fee is 33 marks.

§ 10. The unloading or loading of the full-gauge or narrow-gauge freight wagons must take place immediately after delivery to the siding. The unloading or loading period for a load weight is:

a) up to 5 tons (general cargo) 2 hours,
b) up to 10 tons 3 hours,
c) up to 15 tons 3.5 hours,
d) over 15 tons 4 hours.

The loading period begins at the time the wagons are delivered and is deemed to have been exceeded if the wagons have not been reported ready for collection to the light rail freight dispatcher at the latest a quarter of an hour after the loading period has expired. The night time from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. does not count towards the loading period. During the day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the siding must always be kept free for driving, so that nothing can be damaged when driving on or there is no particular time delay in the delivery and collection of the wagons. Furthermore, the Stadtbahn must be given the opportunity to use the siding, if necessary, to use the siding until 9 p.m. after prior notification.

If the loading deadlines set above are exceeded, in addition to the fee-based wagon demurrage for the tram, a trolley or Car stand fee, charged for the tram of 6 marks for the first two hours for two trolleys or each narrow-gauge car and 8 marks for each additional full or started hour of a weekday that is indispensable for the tram for delivery and collection of the car from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If, after the unloading or loading of the wagons to be picked up has been reported as finished, the tram driver does not find the tram ready for transport - as reported - after the unloading or loading period has expired, so that the locomotive is emptied in vain, then a compensation of 26 marks for each is made for the empty journey Case raised.

The loading or unloading period for a freight wagon that is ready for loading on the loading track of the city station is 6 hours as a wagon load and 3 hours as a general cargo load. If this loading period is exceeded, the unloader or loader has forfeited the wagon demurrage allowance for the state railway.

§ 11. Leaving uncovered furniture and trolleys standing or storing other objects on the loading lane of the light rail is prohibited. A parking fee of 7 marks is charged for every car that is left standing during the night or for every storage of objects during the night. If the loading area is not cleared despite an oral or written request from the Stadtbahnverwaltung, the fee for each subsequent night is 18 marks; In addition, evacuation can also take place at the expense of the defaulting party.

§ 12. The freight payable in accordance with the preceding sentences (§§ 5 - 8) must always be rounded down to a full 10 pfennigs for each individual shipment.

Section III

Final provisions.

§ 13. The transport of people, dogs, luggage, express goods, baggage and wagonload goods is carried out, unless otherwise stipulated in these regulations and in the approval document including the supplements, on the basis of the provisions of the railway traffic regulations of the German Railway Passenger and Transport Authority Baggage tariff part 1, the German rail freight tariff part 1, Dept. A and B and the respective special regulations for the state railways.

§ 14. These regulations come into force from November 1, 1921 with regard to the carriage of express goods and goods and from December 1, 1921 with regard to the carriage of people, dogs and luggage. At the same point in time, the previous regulations cease to apply.

Bus transport

On October 15, 1932, a 3 km long city bus line was set up to replace the connecting line between the main train station and the city station. On October 1, 1939, it was transferred to the city's own Spremberger Stadtbahn , which received two buses and coaches.
