The church Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul is a Romanesque church in the town of Châteauneuf in Saône-et-Loire in the historic region of Burgundy ( France ), which was built in the 12th century. It was listed as a Monument Historique in 1862 .

history

The church of Châteauneuf belonged to the former diocese of Mâcon in the archbishopric of Lyon . The pastor was appointed by the cathedral chapter in Lyon. The Church has as patronage the Saints Simon Peter and Paul of Tarsus . The building, which burned out in the Hundred Years War , was renewed several times, so in 1463 the pillars of the nave were replaced in the late Gothic style. In the middle of the 19th century, the church was restored by Eugène Millet , a pupil of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc .

architecture

Inside

The church has a three-aisled nave and a retracted transept. The choir ends in a three apsidal complex . The three- bay nave is closed by a belted pointed barrel supported by two arcades . The upper clad windows are framed by wide archivolts that rise above slender columns . When building it was probably based on the Saint-Fortunat Abbey in Charlieu .

The vaulted height of the central nave of 12 meters gives the impression of a space striving towards the sky. The aisles are very narrow compared to their height. The central and side aisles are connected by large pointed arches that were raised in the 15th century. The square pillars are preceded by half-columns on three sides . The crossing , above which the tower is located, has an octagonal tambour with four arched windows under its dome . The apse receives light from three arched windows, which are framed by a five-part blind over pilasters and columns.

Outside

The square crossing tower has a stone helmet. The two upper floors have arched windows that are framed by columns with carved capitals .

The main facade has three arched windows and the main portal , apart from the capitals, is unadorned. The side portal has a lintel from the 12th century: The twelve apostles are depicted standing under small arcades .

The cornice on the apses is profiled and provided with carved corbels that depict grimaces.
