The Catholic parish church of Saint-Romain in Curzon , a municipality in the Vendée department in the French region of Pays de la Loire , was largely rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century on the site of a previous building from the 13th century. The church is dedicated to St. Romanus von Blaye (also Romanus von Le Mans), a martyr from the 4th century. In the middle of the 19th century, a crypt from the 11th century was discovered under the church choir . This crypt was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique in 1875 .

history

As early as the 8th century, monks from the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm founded a priory in Curzon . In the 11th century, Curzon was a parish with nine churches and several chapels. In the 13th century, a new church was built, which, like the monastery buildings, was set on fire during the Huguenot Wars . The current church was built around 1873/75 over the 11th century crypt.

architecture

The church is built on the plan of a Latin cross . The single-nave nave opens into a semicircular choir in the east . The bell tower rises above the crossing . The west facade is structured by buttresses . A round arched portal framed by columns is cut into the facade, and a large round arched window opens above it.

Saint Romanus

The stained glass window on the west facade depicts the patron saint and patron saint of the seafarers, St. Romanus von Blaye. Another window is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The windows depicting Jesus on the Mount of Olives and his ascension to heaven, as well as the windows depicting the Annunciation and the war window depicting Joan of Arc, bear the signature of Lux Fournier. They were carried out in Tours in 1903 and 1935 respectively . The windows depicting the apparition of Mary in Lourdes and the depiction of Jesus pointing to his heart and appearing to the nun Margareta Maria Alacoque were created between 1930 and 1936 by the glass painter Henri Uzureau in Nantes .
