The Catholic parish church of Saint-Romain in Saint-Romain , a parish in the Côte-d'Or department in the French region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté , was built at the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century on the site of a Benedictine priory . In the church there are sculptures and pieces of furniture that are classified as Monument historique . The church is on the list of the Inventaire général du patrimoine culturel , the register of cultural heritage in France.

history

The chapel of the castle served as the first parish church of Saint-Romain. Century and of which only ruins remain. At the end of the Middle Ages, the function of the parish church was transferred to the Benedictine priory church, consecrated to St. Hilary of Poitiers , which Cluny Abbey probably set up in the 11th century on the hill where the parish church is today and which existed until the end of the 16th century . For the new use as a monastery and parish church, the nave was extended , a new choir was built in the east and the mighty bell tower with the portal vestibule on the west facade. In the 17th century the vault of the nave was renewed and the church was given new fittings . Further extensive renovation work took place in the 18th century. The sacristy was built in the 19th century .

architecture

The bell tower is framed by flying buttresses and divided into four floors by cornices . The bell storey is pierced by arched sound arcades . A keel-arched portal is cut into the ground floor , above which a three-lane tracery window opens . Eleven steps lead from the portal vestibule to the single-nave nave.

Leaded glass window

The church is equipped with leaded glass windows from the 19th century. The window with the representation of St. Joseph bears the signature of Joseph Besnard . The other windows depict the Archangel Michael , Saint Benignus of Dijon and Saint Hilary of Poitiers . One window is dedicated to the teaching of Mary. Another window shows Mary standing on the crescent moon and crushing the snake. She points to her heart, which is pierced by a shear.

Furnishing

  • In the vestibule there is a baptismal font that dates back to the 14th century.
  • The pulpit dates from the early 17th century. The stone pulpit is decorated with the reliefs of a bishop and two other figures. It is carried by a large eagle sculpture that stands on a pedestal. Vines and birds pecking at the grapes are depicted at the pulpit entrance. The sound cover is carved from wood. In 1851 the pulpit was moved to its current location, restored and supplemented.
  • The figure of St. Anthony is a work from the 16th century. Anthony is endowed with his attributes , the book, the bell, the pig. The fire under his feet is reminiscent of the Antonius fire , a plague against which the saint was implored for help.
  • Like the figure of John the Baptist , the group of figures of the Instruction of Mary comes from the first half of the 17th century. Johannes is dressed in fur, and the inscription on the tape that winds around his body reads: "ECCE AGNUS DEI".
  • The relief of the crucifixion group with Mary and John also dates from the 17th century. At the foot of the cross Mary Magdalene is shown next to a skull and her ointment vessel.
  • The figure of the apostle John, which is dated to the 17th century, is identical to the figure of Mary, which was made in the 19th century, in terms of processing, posture and drapery. The figure of Mary is presumably a replica of the lost counterpart to the figure of John. Both figures are classified as Monuments historique .
