The Catholic parish church of Saint-Vincent-Saint-Germain in Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil , a parish in the Essonne department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built at the end of the 12th century in a transitional style from Romanesque to Gothic . The church is consecrated to St. Vincent of Valencia and, as the second patron, St. Germanus of Paris . In 2018, the church, in which stained glass windows from the 13th century and tombstones from the 13th to 16th centuries have been preserved, was added to the list of architectural monuments ( Base Mérimée ) in France as Monument historique .

history

According to legend, the church was founded by St. Germanus of Paris and the parish was established by the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey in the 8th century . At the end of the 12th century, the original wooden church was replaced by a massive stone structure. This church had a tall bell tower that collapsed in 1793 and a portal porch that was demolished in the 19th century.

architecture

Exterior construction

The west facade is divided by two massive buttresses and crowned by a bell gable with a cross , which was built in the 19th century to replace the collapsed bell tower. A pointed arched portal opens on the ground floor, which is surrounded by slender columns and archivolts with geometric decorations. The unadorned tympanum is framed by a three-pass arch. Niches with figures created by Elias Robert in the 19th century have been cut above the portal. In the middle, Christ is depicted as judge of the world and on the side the two church patrons, St. Germanus and St. Vincent. The upper part of the facade is broken up by two arched windows, above which a blind arch frieze runs, to which a triangular gable adjoins a clock.

inner space

The three-aisled nave opens into a recently closed choir in the east . The main nave and the two side aisles are covered by ribbed vaults.

Leaded glass window

rosette

The rose window and the three leaded glass windows in the choir date from the 13th century. They were listed as a historical monument in 1908. The Lamb of God can be seen in the center of the rosette . On the outer scenes, one sees St. Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar and other saints who are martyred. The left window shows the root of Jesse . The lower scene shows Jesse lying down with a tree growing out of the side. In the middle panes the biblical kings David and Solomon as well as Mary, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are depicted, on the side panes you can see other kings and prophets of the Old Testament. The middle window is dedicated to the passion of Jesus, which begins with the entry into Jerusalem (below) and ends with the resurrection (above). The right window shows scenes from the legend of St. Germanus. In the lower scene Germanus extinguishes a fire in Autun, in the next scene he receives the keys to the city of Paris, in the scene above he is shown with the Merovingian king Childebert I and in another scene Germanus is ordained bishop in Paris. The uppermost panes represent the death of St. Vincent, whose soul is received by two angels.
