Saint Blaise Church

St. Blasius is the Protestant town church of Bad Liebenzell . The church named after Saint Blaise of Sebaste was consecrated on October 12, 1893.

history

The church was first mentioned in a document around 1600. It was built under Duke Welf VI. von Swabia and his wife Uta von Schauenburg . It was initially only the central church for the places around Liebenzell. Later the church district extended to Wildbad and shortly before Weil der Stadt . Until the introduction of the Reformation by Margrave Karl II of Baden-Durlach , the diocese of Speyer was responsible . In 1603 the community came to the Württemberg regional church .

Building description

The oldest parts of today's church building are the Gothic sacristy and the early Gothic choir , covered with a star vault , which was the actual church hall at the time. The nave was later added to it. It was demolished when it became too small. The new building, erected from 1891 to 1893 during the reign of King Karl I of Württemberg and his successor Wilhelm II , was adapted to the Gothic choir. The central nave has galleries on both sides, but only one aisle. The central nave has a gable roof on the outside and also on the inside, because it is not vaulted.

On the south side between the choir and nave is the bell tower , the predecessor of which had to be demolished in 1653 due to its dilapidation. In 1778 a sundial was attached to the south wall .

The portal is located in the annex adorned with pinnacles in the west. The relief above the front door, it shows Christ as the good shepherd , is the work of the sculptor Albert Gäckle .

Furnishing

In the choir there are still parts of the old choir stalls , which were carved by Cubel Cuntz around 1463 . The window in today's choir comes from the workshop of Gustav van Treek .

From the old pulpit , only the foot and the railing of the stairs were reused, but the new parts were adapted to the old ones. The ambo and the Easter candlestick , both made of maple wood, were designed in 1981 by the Liebenzell artist Gottlob Blessing. The organ was built in 1846 by the organ builder Johann Heinrich Schäfer from Heilbronn. It has 25 registers since the last renovation .
