St. Catharina is the church of the Catholic parish of St. Catharina in Dinklage .

At 72 meters, it has the highest church tower in the Oldenburger Münsterland . The three - aisled neo - Gothic church was built from 1875 to 1878 by the Münster-based architect August Hanemann and consecrated in 1884 .

The church is under the patronage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria . The patronage festival is celebrated on November 25th . St. Catharine was first mentioned as patroness in 1396. The von Galen family had had patronage rights since the 17th century and did not renounce it until 1956.

history

First church in Dinklage

According to research, the first church in Dinklage was built around 1300. At the time, however, it was a half-timbered church , so much smaller than today's church. It is known from the 14th century that the church was consecrated on July 4, 1349. However, since it was probably a new church, there was already a second church building at that time. But it could also be that the first church (in the style of the half-timbered house) was only consecrated later. Today's research disagrees on this. Little is known about the details of the church either. However, as of 1716, the church was 72 feet long and 29 feet wide. If a foot is calculated as 30 cm, the result is a length of 21,60 m and a width of 8,70 m.

After the Reformation and during the Thirty Years' War , the church at that time suffered greatly. It rather gave the impression of “a barn or a stable”. When the high altar was consecrated in 1652, however, the image of the church changed. A visit on May 3, 1655 says: “Church and congregation are large. In the church everything looks completely and wonderfully made because of the epitaphs of Dinklager nobles. "After the Thirty Years War, after the recovery of the Protestants and after the incorporation of the residents of Bünne and Wulfenau the population grew in Dinklage again. As a result, the church became too small for the congregation. In 1703 Pastor Ribbers wrote a letter to the then bishop in which he criticized the fact that the church could not even accept a third of the faithful: “This gives rise to a lot of disputes, and sometimes there is even serious tumult in that people are mutually exclusive out of the pews. ”Shortly after Ribbers sent the letter to Münster on December 8th, 1703 , a strong storm knocked over the top of the church tower , but nobody was injured. In 1704 the tower was poorly rebuilt. Until the death of Pastor Ribbers the problem of the too small church was not solved according to the files.

The expansion of the church in the 18th century

After Pastor Ribber's death, Franz Wilhelm Lameyer began serving as a pastor in the Dinklager parish in 1716. After he was familiar with the conditions in the parish, he, like his predecessor, turned to the bishop in Munster to solve the problem of the too small church. In 1720, Bishop Clemens August I (1719–1761) gave the Dinklager parish financial aid through a collection donation. The collection took place in the diocese through house collections. After difficulties with the procurement of materials from Osnabrück , the renovation work was completed in 1727. According to church accounts, the new altar was moved to its new location on January 4, 1727. Little is known about the exact size of the tower and the size of the choir. What is certain is that in the course of the 18th century the church was big enough for the congregation of that time; because only towards the end of the century did the lack of space become noticeable again. This was remedied by expanding the organ room and making it accessible to the community.

Today's church

High altar of St. Catharina

The church has 1050 seats, 4 bells made of cast steel and 2 bells made of bronze. The high altar is a donation of the Count von Galen , the side altars and the organ were made by the merchants Wehry resp. Bahlmann from Amsterdam donated. A pulpit was installed in 1897 , the first heating followed in 1914. The organ stage was last renewed in 1922–23; a new organ was added in 1934. In 1939 a loudspeaker system was installed. The church received new communion pews in 1943, new side windows in 1950 and new choir windows in 1960. In the years 1999-2000, the exterior of the masonry was renovated. The interior was completely renovated in 2003. Since 1958, next to the main portal, a memorial has been commemorating the city's most famous and important son, Cardinal Clemens-August Graf von Galen , Bishop of Münster . The monument comes from the Düsseldorf sculptor Wilhelm Hanebal .
