After the early death of his father, the master carpenter Wilhelm Hanebal, Hanebal completed an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor with Franz Finkeldei in Steinheim from 1919 after graduating from school . From 1929 he attended the Werkkunstschule in Düsseldorf , the private art school Carp and took courses at the art academy . His first exhibition took place in 1922. Apart from a stay of several months in Berlin in 1940, Hanebal was registered from 1929 to 1942 at Drakestrasse 4 in Albert Pehle's studio house in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, where Joseph Beuys later had an apartment and studio. Hanebal created monumental cenotaphs as early as the 1930s. After 1933 Hanebal also created "contemporary" and war-glorifying sculptures, including a. a bust of Hitler. In 1937 he joined the NSDAP , which his biographers had not addressed and after becoming known in 2018 in Steinheim / Westf. led to a discussion about a work exhibited there in the town hall.

After his marriage in 1941 he moved to Johannes-Kirschbaum-Straße 14 in Büderich (part of Meerbusch since 1972 ), where he lived and worked until his death. He is buried in the local cemetery. From 1950 he had a workshop near his home. When he received increasing orders for stone memorials in the post-war period, in 1955 he moved his workshop to the Apelter Feld in Büderich at the urging of the neighborhood.

In addition to the large sculptures, Hanebal created numerous realistic portraits as well as other smaller sculptures in wood, stone and bronze, as well as religious commissioned works, including 14 slate reliefs for the Way of the Cross around the Büdericher Dyckhof.

Stylized figures in angular shapes are typical of Hanebal's style. After 1945, his sculptures are increasingly characterized by clear lines and generously spaced surfaces. He was based heavily on classical German expressionist sculpture, as known from Ernst Barlach , for example .

In Büderich, Will-Hanebal-Platz was named in his honor.
