The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Christophorus is located in the Tiefurt district of the city of Weimar in Thuringia . It belongs to the Weimar parish in the Weimar parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany and is historically closely linked to Tiefurt Castle .

History and equipment

The church, which was erected in Romanesque proportions, was laid out in Romanesque proportions around 1200 after the knight saint St. George had risen . There was probably a sacred building at this location before. The outer walls and the stone altar table with its base plate, in which five consecration crosses from the pre-Reformation period are preserved, date from the 13th century.

The archaic altar stands under a baroque canopy with four palm trunks. The symbol of the Triune God - the Trinity - can be seen above the pyramid pulpit. The pulpit is decorated with portraits of Moses, John the Baptist and the teaching Christ as mediator of the Holy Scriptures.

Around 1500 Tiefurt became a widow property of the Weimar dukes. The church with the medieval choir room , the altar hall and the carved figures of the reredos altar were also oriented towards this . It was mentioned after 1900. During the Thirty Years War , the original interior, windows and roof were destroyed.

After 1700 the interior was built as a copy of the Weimar castle . Heavenly castle and confessional and pyramid altar as well as the apostle gallery on the galleries after Jacques Callot say a lot. In 1740 the tower was given a new dome with a striking clock and two bells . In 1776 the church became the prince's secondary residence church , and later the summer residence .

The gallery parapet in the nave bears images of Christ and the twelve apostles.

Other special features are the off-axis tower with tower chapel and tracery windows and the pulpit clock .

With the renovation from 1980 to 1982 led by Horst Jahresling , the baroque decor was restored as true to the original as possible. In 1981 the church was dedicated to Christophorus Church. It was closed in 2010 due to the risk of the roof collapsing.

In 2011, the roof was renewed to meet the requirements of historical monuments with larch wood, dormers and a tiled roof. An electrical system was built in and bench heating was installed. The house has been painted inside and out. In the future the doors are to be restored.

organ

In 1740 the nave got a small organ . In 1909 a pneumatic organ was purchased, 17 stops are divided between two manuals and the pedal .

Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg worked there as cantor from 1847 to 1870, as evidenced by a plaque in the church. Franz Liszt , Johann Wolfgang Goethe and numerous other music lovers were drawn there again and again because of the organ.

The construction work in 2011 gave the wooden barrel excellent acoustics.
