Interior

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Georg is a listed church building in Alt-Kaster , a district of Bedburg in the Rhein-Erft district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The late Gothic church tower is characteristic of the town. The church of St. Martinus also belongs to the parish. The parish is part of the Archdiocese of Cologne .

History and architecture

The first documentary mentions are for 1362, here the Bishop of Liège wants to give Duke Wilhelm and his wife marriage dispensations if they donate a chapel or an altar as atonement. A three-aisled predecessor building from the 15th century has been proven by excavations.

Today's church, a simple brick hall , was built between 1783 and 1785 with a flat, round choir closure . It stands in the center of the village and faces north-east. It is 27.5 meters long and 13.25 meters wide. The building stands on a circumferential base, the walls are divided into stone frames by arched windows.

The west tower from the 16th century is crowned with a steep, slate-roofed pyramid , under which a cross made of glazed bricks is visible. It is three-story, the two upper floors are divided by sound windows and ogival windows. The mirrored ceiling with curved stucco was extensively renewed in 1979 and the late Baroque style furnishings were extensively refurbished and revised from 1980 to 1982 based on findings.

Furnishing

The late baroque furnishings from the period from 1760 to 1790 have largely been preserved, with production already started before the new building. The main altar , created around 1785, has a structure made of wood and four columns, above the blasted gable there is a pair of pilasters . The altarpiece, an oil painting on canvas, about 2.20 meters high and 1.45 meters wide, shows the crucifixion, at the feet of Christ Mary Magdalene, and three angels who collect the blood of the crucified in goblets. The two side altars are consecrated to Maria and Rochus, the Marien Altar is on the left, the Rochus Altar on the right. The Marian altar from around 1785 has a shell niche between two pairs of columns. The top is curved, in the niche there is a carved figure depicting a standing Mother of God with the baby Jesus, it is 98 cm high. A pigeon can be seen in the top of the gable. On the antependium of the Rochus altar, the name of the saint can be read in intricate script, a figure of the saint about one meter high stands in the niche of the altar, above his knee he points to a plague boil. On the sides of the main altar are two reliquary cabinets from around 1750 to 1760. They are decorated with rich shellwork . In each case above the middle a glazed display cabinet with rungs is set into the wall. The tapes on the left indicate St. Ursula and her companions as well as the martyrs of the Thebaic Legion . The relics in the right cabinet are not labeled, the bones have a cross in the middle. The pulpit dates from around 1785, the fields of the six-sided basket are decorated with grapes and garlands. The sound cover is crowned with an eye of God in a halo. The richly decorated communion bench separates the chancel from the nave , the oval 22 × 30 cm oil paintings in frames made of carved tendrils show the Annunciation , the Adoration of the Magi , the Last Supper and the Ascension of Christ . On the two carved fields in the middle are the Lamb of God, a chalice with a host and grapes and ears of wheat. The alliance coat of arms shows the inscription Praenob (ilis) Marci Dackweiler satrapae et Christianae Hoffstats conjugum largitate. (Due to the generosity of the noble Bailiff Marcus Dackweiler and Christina Hoffstats, married couple) The two confessionals from the end of the 18th century are on the two long sides of the ship, they are decorated with laurel hangings. The figure of Anthony of Padua with the baby Jesus stands on a baroque console. It is colored and about 70 cm high. A figure of St. George hangs to the left of the pulpit, it is the work of a layman. An oil painting with the size of 280 × 160 cm from the 17th century shows the adoration of the shepherds. In the upper area an angel holds a banner with the text GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO .

A neo-baroque pew stands in a niche near the organ staircase, it is decorated with rich shellwork and curved cheeks. The dome of the baptismal font stands on an octagonal foot made of sandstone, the lid made of brass is 60 cm high.

The company Verschueren from Heythuysen built the historical organ with mechanical work at the end of the 18th century. The instrument has 15 sounding registers and is operated on two manuals and a pedal . The Way of the Cross hangs under the organ gallery; the enamel work was done by Egino Weinert from Cologne in the 20th century.
