Church of St. Georg and Florian in Reicholzried

St. Georg and Florian is a listed Catholic parish church in Reicholzried , a district of Dietmannsried in the Oberallgäu district ( Bavaria ).

history

The first church on this site, a late Gothic building from the 15th century, was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War in 1632 and rebuilt by 1679. The Sebastian Chapel was added in 1700. The upper tower floors were rebuilt after a lightning strike in 1719 and the onion dome in 1789. Renovations took place in 1870 and 1921.

Building description

The east-facing church building is at the southern end of Reicholzried on a hill. The nave with arched windows consists of three window axes. The wood-paneled ceiling created in 1700 was replaced by a flat ceiling in 1789 . To the north-east of the nave is the Sebastian chapel under the extended gable roof of the nave. The Sebastianskapelle is flat-roofed towards the nave like a side aisle . The transition from the nave to the Sebastian chapel is formed by three arched arcades . The arcades are supported by two short round columns, which rest on an eight-sided capital block or a square base. Two round windows are used in the Sebastian Chapel. A classical wooden door with baroque fittings is located at the northern side exit. A sandstone frame with Corinthian columns, a blown gable and an oval skylight is attached to the outside at the side exit . The gable is marked 1700 . There is a two-story gallery on the west wall of the nave, on the back wall of which two round windows are inserted. The west exit, from around 1700, like the north side exit, also has a sandstone setting. In this round-arched fielded version there is a fielded wooden door with old fittings. In the sign there is a mesh vault with pointed arched side exits. Below the gable roof is a round arch frieze. This is also located on the slightly protruding gable. The retracted choir adjoins the nave through a round choir arch . The choir, closed on three sides, consists of three bays and contains a baroque stab cap barrel . Previously there were late Gothic ribs here, but they were knocked out. In the choir, as in the nave, there are round arched windows, the eastern one being walled up. Around the choir there is a high plinth and double buttresses with a monopitch roof . There is a round arch frieze on the choir under the gable roof. The church tower was built from tufa blocks. Until the renovation in 1719, the church tower was covered with a gable roof. On top of the square church tower is an octagonal upper floor, on which sits the onion dome over a strong cornice. The sacristy is located in the northern corner of the choir and was extended to the east in 1922. An iron-studded door leads from the sacristy into the choir.

Frescoes

The frescoes were created by Franz Josef Hermann in 1789. The adoration of the Lamb by the 24 elders is shown in the choir. The large ceiling picture with pseudo-architecture in the nave shows the victory of Christianity over paganism with the glory of the two titular saints . The ceiling painting is signed with Franz Josef Hermann 1789 . The four evangelists are shown in the spandrels. In the throat there are frescoes of the twelve apostles in grisaille painting . Above the gallery the expulsion of the merchants from the temple can be seen. On the gallery parapet there are representations of three divine virtues . Some of the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sebastian Chapel have been heavily renewed. You can see Saint Sebastian with putti and armor.

Altars

The high altar and the side altars were created in 1758 by a Kempten sculptor. They are marbled with Rocailles decor . Originally the high altar contained a baroque altarpiece , which, however, was replaced by a modern figure of the Virgin . This is flanked by cranked double columns. On rocaille consoles there are white-framed wooden figures of Saints George and Florian. In the altar extract above the moving figure of God the Father can be seen, above it a Holy Spirit dove surrounded by a halo with putti heads. At the tabernacle with crucifix and lamb there are two modern putti.

The structure of the side altars follows that of the high altar and contains an altarpiece flanked by columns. On the left side altar the altarpiece shows the Adoration of the Shepherds, in front of the columns there are the figures of Saints Joachim and Anna . The Adoration of the Holy Three Kings can be seen on the right side altar . The figures in front of the columns represent the apostle Peter and St. Magdalena. Both altar leaves are signed with Franz Josef Hermann 1786 .

pulpit

The early classicist pulpit was built around 1789, presumably with the help of Franz Xaver Feuchtmayrs . The three-part rounded basket contains stucco marble fields. The rear wall with the pulpit door is surrounded by a drapery held by putti . On the cover with lambrequin are putti with a plaque of the law.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font is in the Sebastian chapel and dates from around 1700. A round foot with a shell basin is made of red marble on the octagonal sandstone plinth. The lid with acanthus carvings is crowned by a white and gold carved group of the baptism of Christ . The carving group dates from 1760.
