The Sankt Hedwig Church is the Catholic Church in Rüningen , a district of Braunschweig . It is a branch church of the parish of St. Bernward with its seat in the Heidberg district , in the Braunschweig deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. Hedwig von Andechs has the address Am Westerberge 27 . The catchment area of ​​the church includes the Braunschweig districts of Broitzem , Gartenstadt and Rüningen.

history

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Rüningen, which has been evangelical since the Reformation , increased considerably due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons , mainly from Silesia . Catholic church records have been kept in Rüningen since 1949 .

The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1956 and its benediction on May 19, 1957 . St. Hedwig was the first church to be consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . The patronage refers to St. Hedwig von Andechs, the patron saint of Silesia. On April 1, 1959, the parish of Rüningen became independent, previously Rüningen belonged to the Braunschweig parish of St. Joseph .

Since November 1st, 2006 the church belongs to the parish of St. Bernward, the parish of St. Hedwig was abolished. At that time the parish of St. Hedwig belonged to about 1700 Catholics.

The church, located around 75 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig , designed as a nave construction with a brick facade and roof turret . The church stalls offer around 160 seats. On the west side there are 14 stations of the cross and 12 chandeliers of the Apostles . Furthermore seven small round windows, which symbolically represent the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. In the east side aisle , there is a radiant Madonna, framed by a rosary . A wooden relief there depicts St. Hedwig. A small side chapel houses a statue that shows Jesus Christ on the scourge column . There is also a confessional and an intercessory book. The organ located on a gallery was built in 1998 by the Westfälischer Orgelbau S. Sauer company . It replaces a previous instrument built in 1980 by the Franz Breil company , which was moved to the St. Elisabeth Church in Wolfsburg in 1998 .
