history

The Roman spolia uncovered in the course of a renovation of the parish church of St. Hippolyt in the years 1972 to 1975 at the northern crypt staircase and at the entrance to the sacristy (including a cross-standing carved relief stone with two Celtic-Roman heads) could be an indication that there is A pre-Christian cult site (temple?) with grave steles has already been located on this site . For this would u. a. also the ordinance of Pope Gregory I (590–604) that relief stones should be walled in as a victory over paganism in Christian churches.

The archaeological investigation of the crypt that was filled in and uncovered during the renovation also showed that it was not only older than the early Gothic main apse , but also older than the High Romanesque nave . In Salzburg -time use of frühkarolingischen Hippolytus - Patroziniums and standing next to St. Mary's Church (as folk and Sanctuary ), suggest a declining on Bavarian nobleman own Church Close, whose roots date back to the time of the monastery was founded in the second half of the 8th century could.

Around the middle of the 10th century, a single-nave hall church with an elongated apsidal hall (around 8 × 32 m), a crypt and longitudinal annex rooms (extensions) can be assumed. This Carolingian-Ottonian type church is said to have been built in Zell am See during the 10th century. In its place, a new building in the form of a towerless pillar basilica was built in the second third of the 12th century .

The church thus shows the oldest structural elements of the Pinzgau. The existing system is therefore Romanesque . The church has three naves and was once equipped with a Gothic rib vault . In the main nave , the stone vault was cut off in 1794 and a formwork vault was drawn in, which was replaced by a flat wooden ceiling in 1898. For high altar lead up four levels, the underlying crypt was initially covered up, but exposed in the course of the renovation in the 1980s again.

The jewel of the church , which is also one of the most beautiful and precious monuments of the Pinzgau, is the gallery with its splendid balustrade. The gallery rests on four differently worked columns made of selected precious marble , between which the rich, filigree-like net vault is stretched. The three pointed arches carry many crabs , merge into pointed turrets with finials, between the three arches are Gothic canopies with carved figures of St. Hippolyt and Florian from 1520. The gallery balustrade shows elegant tracery in four-clover rosettes and fish-bubble style. The work bears the number 1514.

The tower dominates the old town of Zell am See. The strong walls are clad on the outside with blocks of conglomerate , divided into five storeys, which are characterized by Gothic friezes . The higher the friezes, the larger. The tower is 36 meters high and has a gable roof with a stepped gable.

From 1660 to 1670 the church got a new high altar in noble baroque work , which in turn was replaced by a new altar in 1760. Apart from a few ornaments, almost nothing is left of the baroque furnishings; two large statues came to the Prielau church . On the high altar there are two statues from 1480 next to the tabernacle : St. Rupert and Virgil .

In the side altar is the miraculous image of the Maria Wald church, which was demolished in 1773 after a devastating fire in 1770. It is a Madonna with a standing child from 1540. The left aisle has a small Sebastian altar in the semicircular apse with a glass painting in the window and very beautiful, large tombstones, among others by Caspar Panichner (district judge in the 16th century).

During the renovation in 1898, all Baroque art was completely removed from the church, a flat wooden ceiling was put in and two neo-Gothic altars with rich gilding and sculptures by Josef Bachlehner were set up in Hall in Tyrol . The bells from 1904 were drawn in as a metal donation during the Nazi era and melted down, in 1950 four new church bells were consecrated by Archbishop Rohracher .

The church underwent extensive renovations from 1972 to 1975, and in 2012/13 the mighty west tower was finally refurbished and renovated.
