history

A first parish church consecrated to John the Baptist in Pfersdorf is documented as early as 1307; When exactly this was built is unknown.

The core of the steeple of today's church is of medieval origin. In 1746, under master mason Johannes Müller, a new choir room with a ribbed cross vault was added. In 1746 and 1747 a “carpenter from Kützberg ”, which probably means Faber Iignarius Johannes Michael König, was paid to erect a high altar . The high altar picture was created around 1854 by an artist named Leimgrub.

In its current form, the church was built in 1794 under the parish priest Georg Stephan Behr, who had already taken care of the reconstruction of the rectory after taking office in 1780. In 1794 the nave of the church was built under master mason Valentin Schleichert from Kissingen .

In 1795 the gallery, the old confessional, the communion bench and the pews of the church were built; they were made from Rannungen by master carpenter Michael Behringer . The two classicist side altars were made (also in 1795) by the sculptor Michael Rehm from Egenhausen (who also designed the classicist pulpit of the church) and their original altarpieces were made by Georg Peter Straßburger from Würzburg . Today's altarpieces were created by Eulogius Böhler in 1896 , from whom the ceiling painting “The Assumption of Mary” comes.

Pastor Behr consecrated the church in January 1796 with the permission of the ordinariate. After his death on February 5, 1796, he was buried in the center of the choir.

At the instruction of the Kgl. District Court of March 12, 1861, the church tower was increased in 1863.

During the fighting in the village on April 7th and 8th, 1945 during the Second World War , the church tower was damaged by shell fire and was now only 10 meters high.

In 1952 new bells were consecrated. Details are not known. The currently existing bells sound in the tones f ′ - a ′ - c´´.

In 1959 the church was renovated, in connection with which the grave slab of pastor Johannes Göpfert, who had worked in the village from 1614 to 1623, was rediscovered.
