history

Kützberger Warte
The wall of the Kützberger Schwedenschanze

The first known documentary mention of the place took place in 1237 as "villa Kouzissbuor". The place name originated on the one hand from the personal name "Cuozo" and on the other hand from the basic word "-bur" (farmer, apartment), which became "-berg".

In 1960, a settlement area for ribbon ceramics was discovered in the south of Kützberg . In 1973 the presence of the Hinkelstein group could be proven by reading finds . Further finds in the ground confirm the presence of Neolithic settlers around 4000 to 5000 years ago.

The Kützberger Warte is about one kilometer west of the village . It was first mentioned in 1596, but is probably up to 500 years older. A well-preserved ring wall in the timber to the northwest, the so-called Schwedenschanze , testifies to settlement activities even during the early Middle Ages .

Over time, Kützberg was owned by the bishops of Bamberg , the Aura monastery , the Neustadt am Main monastery , the Teutonic Order in Münnerstadt , the Beguines in Sondheim, the lords of Trimberg and von Henneberg . Kützberg belonged to the Werneck office and the Geldersheim Cent Court.

In the Middle Ages, Kützberg belonged to the parish Kronungen , but supposedly became independent in 1464. For the year 1669 membership in the parish Kronungen is again documented; Kützberg then became an independent parish again in the 19th century. A Protestant pastor who was appointed in Kützberg in 1580 was deposed by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . In 1418 the local St. Michael's Church was built . This got a new tower in 1600 and a new nave and choir in 1832 .

When French soldiers under General Jourdan invaded Kützberg in the summer of 1796 as part of the First Coalition War , the church, the schoolhouse and numerous residential buildings were looted. The inhabitants of Kützberg, like those of Oberwerrn, hid in the Reichtaler wood.

On July 1, 1971, Kützberg became part of Poppenhausen as part of the municipal reform.
