The St. Laurentius Church is a Catholic church in Hemsbach in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built between 1747 and 1749.

history

Hemsbach was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 795 . It is not known exactly how long there was a church. In the 12th century a pastor is mentioned for the first time and in 1238 a church. It was a branch church of Heppenheim and so ecclesiastically belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz . There was a dispute between the diocese of Worms and the Electoral Palatinate about sovereignty over Hemsbach , so that the Reformation introduced in the Palatinate in 1556 initially had no effect on Hemsbach. Only after a synod in Heidelberg was the Reformation enforced by force in 1573, on the grounds that the right of patronage was in the possession of the Electoral Palatinate. The first Reformed pastor was David Pareus . In 1653 the Electoral Palatinate and Electoral Mainz closed the Regensburg Recess. Part of this contract was that the churches in Hemsbach and neighboring Laudenbach were used simultaneously . The Catholic pastor for the two villages had his seat in Hemsbach, the Reformed one in Laudenbach.

In the middle of the 18th century, an application was made to rebuild the church, because only the lower floor of the old building was bricked and the wooden structure was worm-eaten. The old church was demolished, only the Romanesque tower remained. In 1749 the new building by Kaspar Valerius was completed and the church was consecrated on April 4, 1751. In 1807/08 the nave was extended by two axes and the roof turret was added. In 1935/36 the Evangelicals built the Christ Church in Hemsbach . Therefore the Simultaneum was ended and the St. Laurentius Church was renovated. The parish has been part of the Hemsbach pastoral care unit in the dean's office of Heidelberg-Weinheim in the Archdiocese of Freiburg since 2000, along with Laudenbach and Sulzbach .

description

Funerary monuments on the eastern wall

The St. Laurentius Church is in the center of Hemsbach. The baroque plastered building is provided with corner pilasters . The church tower with its French dome stands on the west side at the transition from the polygonal choir to the nave . On the south facade there is a round arch niche with St. Laurentius . The trapezoidal gable closes with a roof turret . The wall of the old churchyard has been partially preserved. There are some funerary monuments that used to be on the church. The oldest tombstone is from 1689.

Inside, the choir and nave have mirror vaults . The baroque high altar dates from around 1750. The old side altars were removed during the renovation in 1936. The organ was built in 1960 by Hans-Theodor Vleugels . The instrument has 23 registers on two manuals and a pedal . It has cone chests with electropneumatic actions .

In the tower there is a five-part chime with the strike tone sequence f sharp ´-a´-h´-cis´´-dis´´. The previous main chime, which was cast by Hermann Hamm in Frankenthal in 1953 and consists of the four larger bells, has been supplemented by the small historical bell from 1809, which Lucas Speck originally made in Heidelberg for the small clock tower.
