General

Eicherscheid has belonged to the parish of Konzen since the village was founded in the 15th century . Between 1683 and 1685 the residents built their own church against the will of the Konzen parish and the Aachen Marienstift . However, the Eicherscheider received support from Stephan Horrichem, prior of the Reichenstein monastery . On November 24, 1713, Eicherscheid was finally separated from Konzen and became an independent parish through the Cologne Vicar General Johann Arnold de Reux . At the same time, the new parish was incorporated into Reichenstein Monastery . Previously there was probably an agreement with the pastor of Konzen and the Marienstift in Aachen . Hammer belonged to the parish between 1713 and 1804 and from 1825.

Building history

The church, built between 1683 and 1685, was probably the first church in Eicherscheid and was consecrated on September 2, 1685. In 1713 it was elevated to parish church. In 1777 the bell tower had to be demolished due to its dilapidation and was replaced by a new one. In 1924 the church was so dilapidated that it had to be closed for security reasons. After makeshift repairs, it was initially able to be used again, but a new building was necessary. The old church was demolished in 1933 except for the two lower floors of the bell tower.

In 1933, today's parish church was built in the same place. The foundation stone was laid on May 21, 1933 and the new church was completed just four months later. The consecration took place on September 24, 1933 and was carried out by the Aachen bishop Joseph Vogt . The parish church was planned by the Cologne architect Hans Peter Fischer .

The parish church was badly damaged in the course of the fighting during World War II . After the war, the war damage was repaired under the direction of the architect Schnieders until 1954. At the end of the reconstruction, the new altar was consecrated on March 14, 1954 by the Aachen auxiliary bishop Friedrich Hünermann . In 1980 the building was extensively renovated.
