history
The parish vicarie Vussem-Breitenbenden was established on October 1, 1919. Both Vussem and Breitenbenden previously belonged to the parish of Holzheim . At that time the places still belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne , since 1930 they have been part of the Diocese of Aachen . The elevation to the parish vicarie and the related detachment from Holzheim was only possible with the financial support of the industrialist Paul Girards.
Building history
Vussem is a relatively young church location. The Margaret Chapel in the center of the village was probably the first church in Vussem. The chapel was built in 1804, but by the middle of the 19th century it became too small for the increased population, so that in 1881 a chapel building association was founded. It was not until the early 20th century, the Vussemer believers addressed a makeshift church into an old factory building, which in 1917 benediziert could be.
The current church was built during the Second World War between 1939 and 1940 according to plans by the Aachen architect Karl Schmitz. The consecration took place two years after completion on June 14, 1942. In the further course of the war, the still new church was spared major damage.
In the 1960s, the choir was redesigned according to plans by architect Werner Geyer, Mechernich. The new altar was consecrated on July 6, 1967. The roof was extensively renovated in 2019.
